Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Another windy day is on tap, and there are some very stoked paddlers out there. Today’s the Gorge Downwind Champs race. It runs from Home Valley to the Waterfront Park (as usual, I got it wrong yesterday,a dn earlier today – I do that every year!) and starts mid to late morning. Those paddlers have been told to yield to you and to barges, but c’mon folks – they are racing. Get out of their way! Let ’em shred! On to the forecast: we have day after day of westerlies – they’ll keep on coming at least through Monday. Know what else keeps on coming (through the 21st)? Hood River Bridge closures between 7pm and 7am. Don’t get caught out past curfew or you’re facing at least a 48 minute drive!

Is this feeling helpful? If so, go ahead and make a contribution using Paypal to support it. Send $19.99 or more, and I’ll send the forecast to your inbox for a year.

Friday kicks off with pressures of 30.11/29.99/29.96 for gradients of 0.l2 and 0.03. Westerlies were in the 18-21 range from Swell to Mosier with mid teens at Stevenson and low to mid 20s at Viento. East of Mosier, the wind was generally around 10mph. Models like the idea of 23-26 today between Stevenson and Mosier by late morning, holding through the afternoon. The Lyle-Avery stretch joins at 20-23 this afternoon, and Rufus jumps in with 17-20. East of Rufus, the wind will be under 15mh. River flow over the last 24 hours was 95-224kcfs (lowest in the morning), river temp is 68.36F, and high temp forecast is 90F for Hood River and 100F way out in the desert.

Saturday’s opening shot is 20-23 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 at Stevenson and 5-10 to the east of Mosier. Models hold the wind in the 20-23 range and fill it in from Stevenson to Mosier in the morning and from Stevenson to Avery in the afternoon. Rufus joins at 17-20, and Swell is likely to drop to 17-20 late morning or early afternoon thanks to a weak disturbance far offshore. Who’d have thought things so far away could have an impact. But they do! High temp: 93F.

Writing the complete forecast takes me 1-2 hours a day. If it saves you time, gas money, or helps you plan your life, please consider contributing.

Sunday looks like another good day! Setup: stable. Offshore high pressure: good enough. Desert heat: present. Marine clouds on the west side: just a few. Your dawn patrol should be 21-24 form Stevenson to Mosier. By mid morning, westerlies pop up to 24-27 from Viento to Mosier and hold for the rest of the day. The wind eventually fills in from Stevenson all the way to Rufus and perhaps Arlington. High temp: 90F.

I’m glad you find it helpful, and I appreciate your kindness in supporting the work I’m doing!

Extended: Models keep us in the mid 20s for Monday and probably for Tuesday. Strong hints of a quieter day are present in the ensembles for Wednesday. Beyond that, there’s really too much uncertainty to pin things down. By then, you’ll probably be tired enough that the idea of a rest day will sound good. Have fun out there today!
