Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Not much is happening in wind world this morning, and the best chance of wind today will be after 5pm. Tomorrow, Wednesday, looks much stronger; westerlies will be focused on the eastern Gorge. You’ll be heading east again on Thursday as cooler, cloudier weather on the west side drives the wind to the eastern Gorge. Models have Friday as a light wind day and bring back the west wind for the weekend. Before I forget (because I forgot yesterday!): the Port of Hood River is doing bridge lifts for inspection purposes ALL WEEK LONG. This will result in 30+ minute delays between the hours of 7am and 3pm.

A hot day today with relatively low pressure offshore leaves us wanting for thermal support. Best wind will be the executive session. Pressures to start were 29.97/29.95/29.96 for, well, not much to start the day. Models drag westerlies up to 12-15 this morning (I don’t believe it – I think it’ll be less) before dropping them back to 10-13 through the afternoon. What wind there is will be found only between Stevenson and Swell. To the east: calm. Wait until the executive session. When Portland starts to cool, we’ll have the potential for 16-19 from Stevenson to Doug’s. River flow over the last 24 hours was 141-218kcfs, river temp is 62.60F, and high temp forecast is 90F under clear sky.

A one-two punch of warm front cold front on Wednesday sets us up for strong, but gusty, west wind. Out in the desert, instability will diminish wind quality in the afternoon. The day starts with a blustery dawn patrol of 26-29+ from Stevenson all the way to Arlington and maybe even Boardman. Clouds will be present west of Hood River to start the day and will push farther inland as the day goes on. This causes areas west of Lyle (or maybe west of Mosier) to drop to gusty 20-24 mid morning. To the east, the wind rises to gusty 29-32 from the end of the low clouds (Mosier or Lyle) all the way to Boardman. Offshore high pressure will be lacking, and with fronts moving through and instability present, the wind will probably be gusty. But the giant thermal gradient will help. High temp: 76F for Hood River and 93F for Pasco. 82F for Arlington.

Cool air lingers in the wake of the cold front that passes Wednesday night. Westerlies start at 11-14 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. A deep and solid marine layer starts the day west of The Dalles and sticks around in Hood River. Head east for best results. We’ll have 23-26 from Avery to Arlington with 18-22 from Lyle to Doug’s and 20-23 at Threemile. High temp: 68F and cloudy in Hood River.

Extended: brief ridging on Friday (probably) gives you a rest day from wind sports. Westerlies of some sort, 20+ mph, are in the cards Saturday through Monday. Models hint at stronger offshore high pressure next week. That’s a setup that can lead to the wind over performing. Fingers crossed for the holiday week and weekend! Have a great day today. Stay cool out there!
