Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! It’s worth considering a rest day today – we have a big day on tap for Thursday. After that, generally speaking, the pattern looks decent for wind. Details are a big unclear over the weekend still due to some conflict in the ensembles, but we’ll stick with offshore high pressure for the period, usually a good sign for west wind in the Gorge, especially when it’s accompanied with not-hot weather.

Wednesday starts with pressures of 30.13/30.06/30.05 for gradient of 0.07 and 0.01. Westerlies were generally in the 5-10mph range to start the day. Write off the eastern Gorge, east of The Dalles. Today’s focus will be in the west. We’ll see a slow morning build to 17-20 from Viento to Swell then Hood River, then Mosier, then Stevenson. The wind should fill in by 1pm or so. For the afternoon, we’ll see a drop to 14-17 from Viento to Hood River with 19-22 at Stevenson and from Mosier to Doug’s. River flow over the last 24 hours was 215-267kcfs (that rules out the Rufus stretch for SUP, but not other activities), river temp is 56.48F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 80F.

A low moving into BC on Thursday sends cooler air into the metro area – low clouds are actually forecast to increase and push deeper into the Gorge in the afternoon. Combine this with moderately strong offshore high pressure and a weak heat low in the desert and strong upper level wind for a big day on the river. TJ’s dawn patrol will be 20-23+ from Viento to Mosier (probably strongest at Mosier. The wind quickly builds to 27-31 from Viento to Doug’s and 23-26 in the eastern Gorge. There will be a period mid-morning where the wind holds at 27-31 from Viento to Arlington prior to the clouds pushing past Hood River and maybe as far as The Dalles. If/when this happens, head east of the cloud line for 29-33+ from Mosier to Threemile and potentially Boardman all the way through sunset. Don’t forget to stop at Amayah’s for Indian food on the way home. Under the clouds, the wind will turn very gusty. Stevenson is a big maybe on Thursday – it’ll be under the clouds all day. Expect gusty and inconsistent conditions there. High temp: 71F for Hood River and 77F in Arlington. Pick of the day: Hatch mid-morning and the Wall, Rufus, or Arlington in the afternoon. I think the direction should be okay for the Rufus stretch. If not, just go to Arlington or Roosevelt!

Friday sees lesser gradients as morning cloud cover is less extensive and cool air will have filled in across the region. Still… we should see 17-20 or a bit more to start with 22-25 in the afternoon. The focus will be Mosier to Doug’s, with the Maryhill zone joining later, but you’ll have at least an hour of two at Swell before this shift eastward happens.

Extended: As of this morning, there’s still a fair bit of model range for the weekend. That said, the models have west wind. It’s just a matter of how much. Ensembles indicated a strong day on Saturday followed by more moderate (but potentially strong) westerlies Sunday and Monday. That’s your Canadian holiday weekend forecast for now. We’ll dig in deeper as we get closer.
