Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Hey snow shredders! Models have been bouncing around quite a bit on the amount of snow we’ll get through the weekend, but there’s definitely at least some snow in the forecast They’re still calling for around 3” of water equivalent through the end of the month, mostly as snow. Think cold!

Clouds Thursday night give way to a cloudy start on Friday. A little mixed precip during the day gives way to heavier precip for a short period in the evening. That’s probably going to start as rain or mixed precip and transition to wet snow. The snow level will be 6500′ in the morning, 5500′ midday, 6500′ in the afternoon, and then will fall to 4000′ after midnight. Precip will be done by the time the snow level falls that far. A trace of mixed precip or snain is forecast for the day shift. In the evening, a quick system swings through and drops about 0.4” water equivalent (WE). That’s probably going to start as rain and transition to snow. Call it 1-2” wet snow at 5000′. Wind: S 5-15 in the morning, S 10-20 in the afternoon, and WSW 15-20 overnight.

Saturday starts clear and quickly clouds over. If the timing is right, the sunrise will be gorgeous. A trace of snow, just a few flurries, is forecast during the day with a few more flurries possible overnight. The snow level will be 4000′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. Wind: WSW 10-15 in the morning, W 10 in the afternoon, and W 30 overnight.

Sunday looks like a snowy day. The snow level starts at 3000′, rises to 4000′, and falls back to 2500′ overnight. About 0.6” WE is forecast during the day for about half a foot of new snow. That’s medium density new snow. Overnight, another 0.3” WE falls for 3-4” somewhat fluffier snow. Wind: W 30 in the morning, WNW 20-30 in the afternoon, and W 25 after midnight. Moderate snowfall continues Monday and Monday night with moderate west wind. Intermittent storms and cool-enough weather are forecast through next week. Enjoy!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Easterlies Friday, not much wind on Saturday, and Westerlies on Sunday. That’s what we have for now. Models have backed way off on the possibility of wind for Monday. For Sunday, there’s a fair bit of range in the forecasts, but it does like like we’ll have just enough to get out there. Friday kicks off with E 25-30 at Iwash (Rooster) and 20-25 at Stevenson. The wind quickly goes calm at Iwash and then switches to W 10 in the afternoon. Stevenson drops to E 15-20 around noon and then 10 in the afternoon. From Hood River eastward, the wind picks up to E 10-15. After 5pm, as a sharp and brief system swings through with a period of very heavy rain, the wind turns westerly. Briefly. River flow Thursday was 110-158kcfs, river temp is 45.50F, and high temp forecast for Friday is 61F.

Saturday starts with light easterlies, less than 10mph. It turns around to light westerlies, less than 10mph. High temp: 57F. Sunday, as I said before, still has a lot of range in the predictions for wind strength. For now, let’s call it 14-17 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington to start. Models hint at a little more wind from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon. Let’s see what they say tomorrow. You may remember we’d initially had our eyes on Monday? That’s faded away now. So, if any day is our day, it’s Sunday. Fingers crossed!

Cycling

We have reports of brown pow in Post Canyon to 8-Track. Whoopdee, Hospital, and Syncline are also good for riding right now per Strava (the app, not my cat). Sisterwives and Kleeway in Post Canyon are currently closed for rebuilding. Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing (or sunny) when you go to ride; freeze-thaw trails are susceptible to permanent damage. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
