Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Tuesday started with a gorgeous sunrise on the mountain, and it was another warm day of spring-like skiing. Winter returns on Friday after a day of drizzle on Wednesday and cloudy weather Thursday. There’s really not much snow in the forecast unless something changes, but the snowpack will firm up. A lot, probably, which isn’t always the most fun on the lift-serve side, but can be completely epic for skate skiing. So, sharpen up your carving skis or board, and get ready for a change of pace.

Drizzle moves in on Tuesday night and sets us up for … a drizzly Wednesday daytime. The snow level will be 9000′ Tuesday night, 10,000′ Wednesday morning, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ overnight by which time the precip should be pretty much done. About 0.2” rain is forecast overnight into Wednesday morning. That’s followed by 0.2” rain Wednesday daytime and a trace in the evening. Temps will be in the low 40’s on the slopes. Wind: SSW 30-50 early, S 20-40 in the afternoon, and SW 15-20 overnight.

Thursday looks cloudy. A few scattered flurries are possible, but they’re not all that likely after daybreak. The snow level will be 5500′ early, 4500′ around sunrise, and 3000′ after midnight. Wind: SW 15-20 all day and all night. Friday will be cloudy with a few flurries early, but it’ll turn partly cloudy or mostly sunny in the afternoon. The snow level / freezing level will be 3000′ during the day and 0-2000′ overnight depending on locations. Temps at 850mb will be -2C, or upper 20’s. Wind: SW 15-20 in the morning, SW 5-10 in the afternoon, and S 5-10 overnight.

There seems to be some disagreement in the model details over the weekend. For now, Saturday looks clear and cool with the freezing level at 2500′ and light wind. Sunday? Not sure yet. That’s a ways out, anyway. Let’s finish here from now. Fingers crossed for reverse-tilled frozen granular skategroom later this week. Because I”m obsessed. Have a great week on the slopes!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends. If you want the easterlies, you’ll need to jump on them this morning. They’ll fade fast, and there’s not much coming up in the next couple of days. Wednesday morning starts with 30-35 at Stevenson and 40-45 at Iwash (Rooster). It’ll be raining while the wind is blowing. Afternoon wind falls to E 15 at Stevenson and E 5-10 at iwash. River flow Tuesday was 72-153kcfs, river temp is 37.04F, and high temp forecast is mid 40’s. Thursday starts light and variable at Stevenson, picks up to E 15, and goes calm. Iwash starts at E 15 and turns light westerly. It appears the whole Gorge may turn light westerly after 4pm, but not strong enough for windsports. High temp depends on the arrival (or not) of west wind: overcast and 40-50F. Friday will be light and variable and sunny. High temp: upper 40’s. Models for the weekend contain a lot of range and possibilities, so let’s leave it here for now.

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
