Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Wow. What a Monday it was on the slopes – sunny, nearly 50 degrees, t-shirt weather. That’s the last we’ll see of the sun (probably) until Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon, but hey, there’s a lot more sun in the forecast than recently. We’ll pick up a bit of rain Wednesday and Thursday and then perhaps a wee bit of snow later this week. Models are arguing about precipitation totals between Tuesday and Thursday, so (shrugging emoji) we’ll have to wait and see. The snow level will fall below 5000′ sometime early Thursday and stay there for a good long while. Cold weather. That’s good news.

For Tuesday night, it’ll be cloudy. The freezing level drops from 9500′ down to 6500′ Wednesday morning. The snow level rises to 7500′ Tuesday afternoon and 10,000′ after midnight. Trace drizzle during the day amps up a little bit overnight. About 0.3” rain is forecast overnight. Wind: SW 15-25 Tuesday daytime and SW 30-45 overnight.

Wednesday brings light rain. That transitions to very light mixed precip late in the evening and very light snow (or nothing) overnight. The snow level will be 10,000′ to start the day. It falls to 6000′ in the afternoon and 4500′ after midnight. As of this morning, 0.1” rain is forecast during the day followed by a trace of snow. Wind: SSW 30-45 in the morning, SW 20-30 in the afternoon, and SW 10-20 after midnight.

Thursday currently looks cloudy with flurries early (snow level 4500′) and clear in the afternoon. SW wind at 10-20. Clouds Friday morning give way to sun. Saturday looks cooler and partly cloudy. It’s worth nothing that ensembles are calling for 0.75” to 1.0” total precip this week. The GFS deterministic (which drives the above forecast) is calling for about half that. So, we could see more rain than expected on Tuesday into Wednesday. As of right now, precip is forecast to stay too far west Thursday through Saturday to really bring snow accumulation to Mt. Hood. Maybe we’ll get lucky and that will shift? It sure would be nice to get a bunch of new snow atop the saturated snowpack before it freezes, right?

Gorge Wind Forecast

East wind the next two days gives way to a short, light bout of westerlies on Thursday. Models have backed off on the idea of west wind on Friday and Saturday. Let that be a message to you (and me): don’t get attached! Tuesday starts with E 20-25 at Iwash (Rooster) and Stevenson. The wind bounces up and down between 20 and 30 during the day and finally lands at 30-35 at Iwash and 25-30 at Stevenson. River flow on Monday was 81-158kcfs, river temp is 37.04F, and high temp forecast is low 40’s near Stevenson and upper 40’s near Iwash. Wednesday will be rainy in the morning and dry in the afternoon. Easterlies start at 30-35 at Stevenson and 40-45 at Iwash. They’ll fade quickly. In the afternoon, expect 10ish both places. High temp: low 40’s east, upper 40’s west. Thursday starts with E 10 at Stevenson and Iwash. Afternoon wind swings around to W 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River. High temp: upper 40’s under partly to mostly clear, sunny sky. Yay.

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
