Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Good morning, mountain shredders! Timberline and Meadows are opening with limited lifts today, and Teacup has a few trails groomed by snowmobile. You’ll want to take classic skis if you’re headed there, and if you’re headed to the resorts, be prepared for a shallow snowpack. Get it today. Get it while you can. Tonight’s forecast looks rather awful, and the long-range forecast has dry weather for at least the next week. Let’s dive in to this wonderful dreariness!

Saturday kicks off lovely. You should 100% go skiing or snowboarding. I’m going! But not skate skiing. There’s not enough snow for that. Expect high overcast sky this morning followed by snow from late morning on. That’ll switch to rain mid-afternoon at the latest. The (effective) snow level will be 3000′ in the morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 7500′ overnight. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast to fall as snow, for 1-2” of dense snow, before the switch to rain. Models are all over the map for tonight’s rainfall, but generally speaking, they’re calling for 3-5” between tonight and tomorrow afternoon. About 2/3 of that total will fall tonight (groan) Wind: S 10-20 this morning rises to SW 30-35 this afternoon and turns to W 45-50 overnight. That super-strong west wind is the reason the rain totals will be so high: orographics.

Sunday morning opens with a downpour and transitions to light rain in the afternoon. The sky clears around sunset. The snow level will be 7500′ in the morning, 6000-6500′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ after midnight. Sadly, all the precip will be done by the time the snow level drops. About 1.5” of rain is forecast. Wind: W 45 in the morning drops to W 25 in the afternoon and W 15 overnight.

Monday looks clear and cool with the free air freezing level at 3500′. Wind will be variable to 15. The rest of the week looks (with the possible exception of a very weak system on Wednesday or Thursday) sunny and dry. Extended forecast: dry and dry and dry and dry probably through next weekend. 850mb temps (5000′ or so) generally stay above 0C (what we need for snow) through (horrors) Christmas. It appears that dryland training routine is going to get a lot of use, eh? Enjoy today!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! The opportunities for SUP foil charging continue this week. Saturday starts with pressures of 30.36/30.47/30.49 and temps in the mid 30’s. Easterlies at Iwash (Rooster) were 30-35 to start with 15-20 at Viento and Stevenson. Stevenson should rise to 25-30 for a few hours this morning before all launches drop to 15ish as the rain starts up early afternoon. River flow yesterday was 76-112kcfs, river temp is 48F, and high temp forecast is 40F. Sunday looks light and variable. High temp: 48F. Monday brings a chance for westerlies at 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River as weak high pressure builds briefly offshore.

Extended forecast: Tuesday looks like a long-lasting east wind day. Wednesday: shorter lived. Thursday – not certain, but easterly of some sort, most likely. Looking for a big day? Keep an eye on Friday: ensembles are all-in on a big east wind day that shouldn’t be too, too cold. Be safe out there!

Partly cloudy sky this morning gives way to snain early afternoon then heavy rain all night. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and near 40 later. Easterlies. No rainbows. Sunday will be very rainy early and then showery. Temps start in the mid 30’s and rise to the upper 40’s. Light and variable wind. 13% chance of rainbows. Monday will be cloudy then mostly clear. Temps start near 40 and rise to the upper 40’s. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows.

Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
