Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Following a fine day of “just-enough” west wind yesterday, we now turn our attention to a couple of rest days followed by an extended string of easterlies. You’ll have to keep at this wind sport action, because there’s no sign of snow sports action in the near future.

Thursday starts light and variable, picks up to E 15 from Iwash (Rooster) to Stevenson, drops to “light”, and returns at E 15 in the evening. River flow yesterday was 94-144kcfs, river temp is 51F, and high temp forecast is 50F. Friday will be light easterly. It might pick up to 15mph for a bit, but it won’t last long. High temp: 48F under sunny sky. Saturday brings somewhat stronger easterlies, but the cold pool driving them will be deep enough to pour over the Cascades. This generally results in less wind than the models predict; they’re calling for 20-25 at Iwash and Stevenson to start with 30-35 at Iwash later. Let’s knock that down to 15-20 to start and 20-25 in the afternoon and see how things play out. Morning low: 26. High temp: 44. Easterlies confine themselves to the river on Sunday. That should give us 30+ from Iwash to Stevenson. Models keep the wind going all day. Monday brings another round of 30ish mph easterlies with a very chilly start and a sunny afternoon. Models hint at the wind strength backing off after Monday. That’s it for now. Have a good Thanksgiving!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

Pretty much nothing happens on the mountain other than clear, sunny weather for the next week or so. Models hold out hope for a pattern change next weekend, but they’re far from certain about temps and precipitation quantity. For example, we have some members of the ECMWF dropping upwards of three feet at 5000′ ‘by the end of the first week of December. We have other members bringing in no snow at all. The mean predicted total snow for the end of the first week of December is 5” for the GFS and 15” for the ECMWF. And the range, as mentioned before, is huge. So, no clear sign of the start of ski season. Yet.

Thanksgiving on the slopes will be partly cloudy then clear. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 2000′ all day and 1000′ after midnight. Wind: NE 15 in the morning, NNE 20 in the afternoon, and ENE 30 after midnight. Friday will be clear and sunny with easterlies at 20mph or so. The FAF rises to 2500′ in the afternoon and falls to 0′ after midnight. Starting Saturday, elevated warmer air arrives. The FAF rises to 8000′ on Saturday afternoon with 850mb temps (5000′) rising into the mid-upper 30’s. NE wind at 10-15. Similar weather, with lighter wind continues through Monday and Tuesday. The weather is almost certain to stay dry at least through next Thursday.

We’ll keep an eye on the forecast and see how things start to coalesce for the first week of December. Fingers crossed, please. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
