Gorge Wind Forecast

Just enough west wind today (Friday) for some rainbows. We’ll have a better chance of wind on Saturday, but it’s certainly not an ideal setup. On Sunday, we return to easterlies. Good old reliable east wind. It may not be so bumpy on the river, but at least it’s reliable and easy to predict!

Friday pressures started at 30.17/30.16/30.13 for west gradients of 0.01 and 0.03. Not much. Not much. Light and variable wind early picks up to W 11-14 east of The Dalles for a few hours late morning. The wind falls to less than 10mph after 1pm. West of The Dalles, the wind will be less than 10mph all day. River flow yesterday was 89-143kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 52F.

Saturday sees a strong cold front swing through. Ideally, we’d want additional factors: a low moving into the desert and high pressure building offshore. We’ll get neither. Instead, we’re relying on the frontal gradients and lee-side troughing in the desert. Prior to the front’s passage, we’ll see gusty 15-25 from Iwash (Rooster) to Stevenson. As the front swings through mid to late morning, the wind picks up to 11-14 from Swell to Doug’s and gusty 24-27 from Avery to Arlington with more possible east of Arlington to Hermiston. Let’s talk about this a little – Our deterministic model only calls for a few hours of wind. That means you’ll want to drive pre-emptively. Looking at the ensembles for The Dalles (not much) and Hermiston (lots of wind), we have a lack of agreement. So, generally speaking, the farther east you go, the better chance you have of scoring wind. Given the non-ideal setup, steadier conditions will likely be found at not-Rufus locations (which won’t stop me from trying Rufus). What makes this different than our last day at Rufus? Well, that day we had the assistance of offshore high pressure and also a weak low in the desert. All that said, NWS is calling for patchy blowing dust way out east. You’re just going to have to be in the right place at the right time. High temp: 54F.

Easterlies return on Sunday. Expect morning wind at 25-30 at Stevenson with 20-25 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock. Afternoon wind falls to 20-25 at Stevenson and 15-20 at Rooster. As per usual, Viento will be slightly less. The wind should hold through sunset. High temp: 53F. Monday: light easterlies switching to light westerlies. Probably. That’s a long ways out for accurate predictions in such an active pattern. Good luck Saturday!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

A couple more inches of snow fell on the slopes in the last 24 hours. That’s enough to keep it looking pretty, but not enough to get us shredding. Generally speaking, the weather looks a bit warm until the 19th or 20th or 21st… somewhere in that time stretch, there’s a decent chance of the snow level falling to 5000′ or less and staying for a while. That said… that’s a long, long way out to be making any sort of precise forecast. It’s kinda like saying, “As we approach December, it’ll get colder.” Well, duh!

Friday starts with a few flurries on the mountain, adds a little sunshine, and quickly turns cloudy again. Light mixed precip returns after midnight, but perhaps not until 4am. The snow level today will be 3000-3500′ during the day, and it will rise to 5000′ overnight. Wind: W 15 this morning, SW 10-20 this afternoon, and W 50 after midnight.

Strong wind and mix precip is the plan until mid-afternoon Saturday. After that, temps drop, but so does the available moisture. The snow level will be 5000′ early, 6500′ around sunrise, 6000′ mid-morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 4500′ after midnight. Goodness – there’s a lot going on Saturday! During the day, about 0.3” to 0.5” water equivalent (WE) falls as mixed precip. After sunset: just a trace of snow. Wind: W 50 early turns to SW 40-60 mid-morning and W 40 in the afternoon. Overnight, the wind fades and then settles at S 5-15. Note: there is a Nordic ski swap from 4-6pm at Working Hands in Hood River on Saturday.

Sunday will be high overcast. The free air freezing level rises from 4500′ in the morning to 7000′ in the afternoon and drops to 6000′ after midnight. Rain arrives sometime after midnight, but probably not until Monday morning. Wind: S 5-10 slowly rises to SW 10-20 in the afternoon and SW 20-30 overnight. A little mixed precip is forecast Monday into Tuesday morning followed by snow Tuesday afternoon and warmer weather Wednesday. That’s kinda the longer range forecast too: intermittent precipitation with the snow level bouncing around just a little too high to get ski season started. Have a great day today!

Hood River Weather Forecast

Sunday will be cloudy and dry. Temps start in the upper 30’s and rise to the low 50’s. Easterlies. No rainbows.
