Gorge Wind Forecast

If you like middling-strength, freezing-cold easterlies, boy golly do I have a forecast for you! A deep pool of cold air moves into the Gorge from the east on Friday and sets up east flow across the region. That’s the whole region – cold air spills over the Cascades, and this limits the strength of the easterlies in the Gorge. Alas. It’ll still be plenty wind, for plenty of the day, for you to shred the river.

But not today. It’s Thursday, and all you get is light/variable wind. Consider joining the dock start or flat water paddle-up crew at Nichols Boat Basin. River flow yesterday was 71-127kcfs, river temp is 60F, and high temp forecast is 51F. Friday starts with E 20-25 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock, 15-209 at Stevenson, and 10-15 at Viento. The wind holds at 20-25 from Rooster to Stevenson until mid afternoon. Viento, as usual, drops early. Easterlies pick up to 10-15 east of Mosier as cold air moves in.

Saturday and Sunday start sub-freezing with easterlies at 25ish, perhaps 25-30, at Iwash and Stevenson. Expect 15-20 at Viento. As per usual, the wind drops early afternoon. Ensembles like the idea of slightly stronger wind on Monday as the easterlies stop harassing the mountain and become confined to river level. High temps will be in the upper 40’s all three days. Next chance of westerlies? I dunno? Maybe with the weather systems sketched in for late next week? Have a great day today!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

Clear sky is forecast for the mountains the next five days or so. Three of those days will have temps below freezing all day. In other words, the snow quality for your first-of-the-season snow play day will be fluffy. There’s definitely not enough snow for good coverage, but there’s enough snow to make your pup happy if you go play in the snow!

Thursday will be sunny. The free air freezing level starts around 1500′, rises to 2000′, and falls to 500′ overnight. Wind: variable to 5 during the day becoming E 10-20 overnight. Friday will be sunny. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 500′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 0′ overnight. Wind: E 10-20 early, ENE 15 in the afternoon, and ENE 25 overnight.

Saturday looks windy, cold, and clear becoming warmer overnight as the flow turns in SW and changes the air mass. The free air freezing level starts at 0′ (yes, your house too), rises to 2500′ in the afternoon, and climbs to 6500′ overnight. Wind: ENE 25 early, ENE 15 in the afternoon, and SW 10 overnight.

The next few days look warm, sunny, and dry. Models hint at rain returning late next week. That’s rain, not snow – at this point, 850mb temps (5000′ or so) are forecast to remain several degrees Celsius above freezing. No, it’s not quite ski season. Yet.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Mostly cloudy sky with a few raindrops this morning turns partly cloudy this afternoon. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and low 50’s later. Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Friday starts with Nothing and ends sunny. Temps start in the low 30’s and rise to the upper 40’s. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Saturday will be partly Nothing, just near the river, and then clear. Temps start in the upper 20’s and rise to the upper 40’s. Light east wind or calm conditions. No rainbows.

Cycling

Lots of brown pow out there. Go get some for yourself! Hurry up, because we’re likely to enter a freeze-thaw pattern later this week, and riding could be out for several days due to the potential for damaging trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. See events section of this report for upcoming trail work parties on various trail systems. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay?No trails have closed yet due to snow, but we’re likely to lose the highest-elevation trails, at least temporarily, on the 25th . If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
