Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! I’m having trouble concentrating on getting this done this morning because… IT’S GOING TO BE WINDY!!! We”ll have a couple days of at-least moderate westerlies followed by a bigger day on Monday. That’s the one I’m drooling over – it’ll almost certainly give us all an opportunity to charge out to whatever spot is the personal fav.

Let’s start with Saturday. East flow in the morning gives way to Corridor westerlies in the afternoon as desert heating outpaces the metro area. By early afternoon, westerlies pick up to 11-14 from Stevenson to Viento. Hold on a little longer for gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River. River flow yesterday was 62-118kcfs, river temp is 63F, and high temp forecast is 72F.

A weak system swings through on Sunday morning. My go-to model, the operational GFS, isn’t being very helpful; it’s not picking up incoming rain despite pretty much all the ensembles calling for some. Why do we care? Because, duh, rain will impact the wind. First thing: it’ll rain more in the desert, so plan on Corridor or Near East. Next: late wind will be better than early wind thanks to building offshore high pressure lending a hand. Early morning: 11-14 everywhere from Stevenson to Arlington. Midday: gusty 19-22 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Late day: gusty teens from Stevenson to Hood river with 21-24 from Mosier to Doug’s and 17-20 near Rufus. Rufus and areas to the east may overperform if things work out just right. High temp: 66F.

Monday. Yeah, baby! Strong-enough high pressure sends a deep marine layer into the west side. Central Oregon and the desert hold on to some heat and aid the thermal gradient. Models give us 22-25 from Stevenson to Arlington right off the bat along with low clouds in Hood River. Gradients stack up mid-morning for 26-30 from Viento to Arlington. Afternoon sees the marine air surge deeper into the Gorge. This may knock the west side down a bit. Head east of Mosier for 27-31. High temp: 61F for Hood River. 64F at Amayah’s. 64F at Arlington. After Monday, model consensus completely disappears. As a result, it’s completely not worth trying to forecast beyond Monday. Just clear your schedule for Monday. And don’t overdo it Saturday and Sunday!

See events section of this report for upcoming trail work parties on various trail systems. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay?No trails have closed yet due to snow, but we’re likely to lose the highest-elevation trails, at least temporarily, on the 25th . If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
