Gorge Wind Forecast

Once again, it’s a “not much happening” wind report. Guess it’s that time of year when I’ll take some days off here and there. Tomorrow looks like a good one to skip – I’m on call tonight, so tomorrow’s forecast is a “maybe” anyway. For the next couple of days, we have wet weather and short periods of light-to-moderate west wind. Easterlies time themselves just wrong for best results over the Thursday/Friday period. Not much is forecast for the weekend either.

Tuesday starts with pressures of 29.60/29.64/29.62 for E 0.04 and W 0.02. Not much. Light/variable wind this morning picks up to W 10ish midday and fades to less than 10mph in the afternoon. River flow yesterday was 66-94kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 58F.

Wednesday starts off pretty much calm. East of The Dalles, the wind picks up to gusty 12-15ish or maybe gusty 15-18ish in the afternoon. High temp: 56F. Brrrrrrr Thursday starts calm. High pressure builds inland in the afternoon and takes the easterlies to 15-20mph from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Viento. East of there: 5-10mph easterlies. The wind picks up a bit overnight for E 25ish to start Friday. Models suggest it will fade really, really, really quickly. Go for the Dawn Patrol. Weekend wind looks light and variable. After that? Nothing to see in the models, which is way uncool, because we’re supposed to have big westerlies out east in the fall! Alas. It seems to be mountain bike season!

Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

Doesn’t look like we’ve had enough rain as of yet (Tuesday morning) to turn the trails to mud. But by this evening, and definitely by the end of Wednesday, it’ll be too wet to ride. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay? Trails on private land that were previously closed due to fire danger (Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee) have reopened. No trails have closed yet due to snow. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
