Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Not much to talk about today, but as always, we’ll keep talking about the wind/no-wind situation almost every day! Our problem this week lies with offshore low pressure and relentless weather systems through Wednesday. They’ll leave us wet with short-lived, very gusty west wind. Easterlies return for Thursday and Friday, but the timing isn’t exactly ideal.

Monday starts with pressures of 29.68/29.67/29.66 for light west flow. On the river, we have light/variable wind. Models think we’ll see very gusty 18-22 from The Dalles to Arlington after 2pm. West of The Dalles? Intermittent drizzle, less wind, and rainbows. River flow yesterday was 76-100kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 65F.

Tuesday starts light and variable. Models hint at a brief period of 17-20 from Viento to The Dalles mid-morning right before a weather system arrives. Move quickly, because the wind turns light, gusty, and very wet by late morning or early afternoon. High temp: 58F. “Wet” is the best description of Wednesday along with “light and variable”.

Not much will be happening on Thursday morning. Models build the easterlies during the day. Expect 25ish in the afternoon from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Stevenson with a bit less at Viento. Friday starts with 25ish and fades quickly. Poor timing, eh? As of right now, the weekend looks light and variable. Looks like y’all will be doing dockstarting and flat water paddle-ups for the foreseeable future. Enjoy the rain!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

Lots of perfect dirt out there right now – don’t ride in mud or you’ll do permanent damage. Speaking of mud, today’s forecast contains enough rain to turn Post (and maybe some other trails) into muddy messes. Hesitate before riding on Tuesday. Trails on private land that were previously closed due to fire danger (Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee) have reopened. No trails have closed yet due to snow. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
