Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Even though we don’t have much wind on tap today, we do have a beautiful fall day. We move into rainy, active weather for Monday and Tuesday with minimal chances for usable westerlies. Somewhere between Thursday and Friday – models are uncertain – we might have a decent day of easterlies. In the meantime… today is Sunday, October 8th, and there’s a memorial service for Felix Louis N’Jai at the Event Site at 10am.

Sunday starts off with pressures of 29.90/29.92/29.92 for gradients of E0.02 and 0.00. Not much happens this morning other than a bunch of people attempting flat water paddle ups and dock starting. Afternoon westerlies pick up to W 10-13 from Stevenson to Swell or Hood River for a couple hours. River flow yesterday was 70-89kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 81F.

A weather system whips through the area like the tail of a dog midday Monday. Add in rain and offshore low pressure for an unsupportive setup. Light westerlies start the day. Gusty, very gusty 18-22 shows up east of Rufus for a few hours mid-afternoon, but it’ll move eastward to Arlington quickly and then fade away. Models hint at gusty 11-14 from Stevenson to The Dalles, with showers and rainbows, after 2pm. High temp: 65F.

Tuesday will be a soaker, and the high pressure behind this soaker isn’t timed right to give us wind in its wake. Easterlies at 15mph combine with heavy rain to start the day. Afternoon: gusty, very gusty, 14-17 from Stevenson to Rufus. There must not be much hope for Wednesday – I didn’t write anything down! Looking again, I see that today’s version of Wednesday has deviated from yesterdays; we were looking at mid-20’s out east, and now there’s basically nothing. Let’s give it a couple days to sort out. After that: probably a switch to easterlies. Yesterday’s forecast had 30+ for Thursday, but the timing seems to be shifting some. Y’all should vote for a Thursday easterly nuker because I work Wednesday and Friday. Have a beautiful Sunday!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Paddle folks (OC/Surfski) meet at the Hatch Thursday evenings for laps. Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

Lots of perfect dirt out there right now – don’t ride in mud or you’ll do permanent damage. Speaking of mud, today’s forecast contains enough rain to turn Post (and maybe some other trails) into muddy messes. Hesitate before riding on Tuesday. Trails on private land that were previously closed due to fire danger (Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee) have reopened. No trails have closed yet due to snow. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
