Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Give today (Saturday) a few hours, and the wind will switch from easterly to westerly. Westerlies stick around through Tuesday, but they’ll probably end there for at least a day and probably longer. Too much model uncertainty exists to forecast beyond the middle of the week. So, get on it today when it shows up!

Saturday starts with pressures of 29.92/29.94/29.96 for gradients of E 0.02 and E 0.02. That’s not much, but Viento is producing 15mph, and Stevenson’s brewing 10mph. Iwash (Rooster) Rock: calm. The wind holds for an hour or two or three, shuts down, and quickly reverses direction this afternoon. Fingers crossed that the timing works – there’s still some uncertainty in the models. As of right now, they suggest 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier by early to mid afternoon. Average speeds should bump up to 19-22 or a touch more from Mosier to The Dalles mid to late afternoon while holding at 15-18 to the west. That said… for whatever reason my instinct says the Corridor could beat 15-18, so we’ll add a “+” to the graph. River flow yesterday was 58-113kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 84F.

Cross-Cascade thermal gradients combine with a nudge from an approaching front for slightly stronger wind on Sunday. The day starts with 17-20 from Viento to Arlington. Expect a quick rise to 20-23 from Stevenson to Arlington. As of right now, we’re expecting a dip to 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River in the afternoon with 22-25 from Lyle to Arlington. High temp: 82F.

That weather system moves through early on Monday. Give the atmosphere a little time to rebound from the disturbance moving through. That’ll give you better results. The wind starts calmish in cloudy Stevenson, 15-18 from Viento to Mosier, and 11-14 east to Rufus. Afternoon: 22-25 from Stevenson to Rufus. Similar wind strength is forecast on Tuesday (but gustier) as another weather system impacts the Northwest. A stronger, potentially showery system is forecast Wednesday. That’s likely to lead to a no-wind day. So, get what you can between now and then! Have a great day!

Clear sky this morning may add a few cumulus later. Elevated smoke lingers through the evening. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and mid 80’s later. Calm wind early. Moderate westerlies this afternoon. No rainbows. Sunday will be partially high overcast then high overcast. Temps start in the upper 50’s and rise to the low 80’s. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Monday will be high overcast then partially high overcast. Temps start in the mid 50’s and rise to the low 70’s. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Next chance of rain is Wednesday.

Local-ish Events

Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club has their weekly workout at Mayer Park at 6pm on Tuesday. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Paddle folks (OC/Surfski) meet at the Hatch Thursday evenings for laps. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.  

Cycling

As of September 9th, Hospital Hill has reopened. No official word yet on Whoopdee and Underwood. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
