Gorge Wind Forecast
Good morning everyone! Easterlies today give way to a late round of westerlies on Saturday and gusty 20-25ish westerlies Sunday through Tuesday. A stronger weather system is likely to shut down the wind on Wednesday. After that: too much uncertainty to say anything of worth.
Friday’s pressures start at 29.94/30.03/30.03 for gradients of E 0.09 and 0.00. Easterlies start the day at 25-30 near Iwash (Rooster) Rock and 15-20 from Stevenson to Viento. We should see Iwash hold for a few hours while Stevenson to Viento rise to 20-25. The wind fades to 15mph by 2pm and turns light/variable later. River flow yesterday was 59-115kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 89F.
Saturday starts out with light/variable wind. Models actually completely disagree – the high-res model has us with light easterlies to start, and the lower-res model has us with light westerlies. Either way, we’ll call it light and variable. Models have also been shifting the start of meaningful wind later in the day. This is not a good sign. For now, we have 16-19 from Stevenson to Lyle starting early afternoon with 20-23 from Stevenson to Avery mid-afternoon on. Rufus joins at 14-17. High temp: 90ish.
An approaching weather system sends high clouds this way. Generally speaking, these factors indicate gusty conditions as well as a tendency for the wind to drop off in the Corridor in the afternoon. Sunday starts with 20-23 from Viento to Swell with 10-13 near Stevenson and 10-13 east of Hood River to Arlington. Midday wind rises to gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to Arlington for a couple hours. Launches in the west, Stevenson to Mosier, fall to 14-17 in the afternoon while the eastern Gorge holds with gusty 22-25. High temp: 80F.
Models are bouncing around a bit on Monday and Tuesday as they take into account the impact of weak weather systems moving through. We’re probably looking at gusty mid-20’s in the eastern Gorge, but this could change. Let’s wait a couple of days to hone in on the details. Wednesday doesn’t look windy, thanks to a stronger weather system. After that: too much uncertainty to make a prediction. Have a great day in the sun on the river today!

Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club has their weekly workout at Mayer Park at 6pm on Tuesday. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Paddle folks (OC/Surfski) meet at the Hatch Thursday evenings for laps. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.
Cycling
As of September 9th, Hospital Hill has reopened. No official word yet on Whoopdee and Underwood. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
