Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! For the next two days, you can rest from the westerlies and revel in the easterlies. Go find yourself some moderate-strength, steady wind in the beautiful western Gorge. Just get it early, because the wind will fade in the afternoons. Want wind from the other direction? No problem. Westerlies return on Saturday and stick around through Tuesday, at least.

Thursday opens with me 1) sleeping in and 2) teaching my future backup forecaster. This delayed things. Also, I think I’ll do Friday’s forecast tonight as I have to work in Goldendale tomorrow. Thanks to the east wind for making that possible. So, pressures early this morning were 30.09/30.11/30.14 for gradients of E 0.02 and E 0.03. Easterlies will pick up to 15-20 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Viento for a few hours this morning. After 1pm or so, they’ll drop to 10mph, perhaps 10-15 at Stevenson. River flow yesterday was 58-103kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 86F.

Friday starts with 20-25mph at Iwash, 15-20 at Stevenson, and 15-20 at Viento. The wind probably falls off a bit quicker than it will on Thursday. Get on it! By 2pm, the wind turns light westerly, not enough to shred, but just enough to signal change. High temp: 89F.

Saturday opens dead calm. Do people still waterski? If so, they should! Also good early Saturday: fishing, flat-water pop-ups, and e-foiling. Westerlies build into the 13-16 range by early afternoon (Stevenson to Hood River) and rise to 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier after a few hours. High temp: 89F. An approaching front on Sunday makes the wind gustier, but it should still be in the 20-23 range or a touch stronger.

Weather systems swing through both Monday and Tuesday. There’s a fair bit of spread in model predictions. We’re probably looking at mid 20’s, perhaps mid to upper 20’s. Strongest wind will likely be found between Lyle and Rufus, but don’t rule out the Corridor yet. Let’s wait a bit and see. Starting Wednesday, there’s just too much variety in the forecast to make a prediction. Enjoy those easterlies today and tomorrow!

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
