Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Last chance for westerlies until the weekend is today. But don’t you worry – you’ll have easterlies to sustain you on Thursday and Friday. There’s lots of uncertainty to start next week, but models have at least some hint of a stronger day on Monday or more likely Tuesday. Definitely not going to make any promises yet – there’s way too much range in the possibilities.

Wednesday opens up with pressures of 30.14/30.07/30.06 for gradients of 0.07 and 0.01. Models suggest the wind will drop midday thanks to widespread warmth and return in the evening thanks to thermals. That said, models also say that marine clouds will be persistent on the west side. If that happens, the wind will overperform. So… let’s be conservative with the forecast and rejoice if things work out better. Early wind should be 17-20 from Viento to Swell with 10-13 from Hood River to Mosier Models knock the wind down to 11-14mph (Stevenson to Mosier) early afternoon and bring it back at 14-17 mid afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier. My instinct is the wind will overperform, but let’s see how reality plays out! River flow yesterday was 57-96kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 80F.

A heat low sets up on the west side Thursday and sucks the breeze into its waiting arms. Early wind should be nearly calm. It picks up to E 15-20 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Viento midday and holds for a few hours. In the afternoon, it drops to 10-15mph. Locations east of Swell should remain under 5mph all day. High temp forecast: 86F. Friday starts off with E 15-20 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Viento, holds til early afternoon, and fades to less than 10mph. High temp: 88F.

Models suggest we’ll have 19-22 both Saturday and Sunday. If that forecast holds, Saturday is likely to be the steadier of the two; Sunday’s wind, whatever it turns out to be, will be driven in part by an approaching front. That tends to decrease consistency and reliability. High temps fall into the upper 60’s to mid 70’s on Monday and Tuesday. This will likely be accompanied by westerlies in to the low to mid 20’s or better. That said, there’s really too much range in the forecasts to make a solid call. Have a great day today. I hope you get on the river!

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
