Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Yesterday’s wind did exactly as it was supposed to: one notch shy of nuking all day long in the Corridor. Massive gradients this morning (it’s Tuesday) are driving westerlies at 25-30 all through the Gorge, all the way from Viento to Arlington. In a fun twist, the weather system we were expecting to disrupt the wind today has moved through earlier than expected. Afternoon thunder is way less likely now, and your Arlington/Threemile/Rufus journey is green-lighted. Looking at tomorrow, we have westerlies in the mid to upper 20’s out east. Nothing on Thursday as rain dominates the weather picture. Unimpressive wind through Saturday gives way to “enough” on Sunday, but models aren’t certain just how much we’ll have.

So, let’s look at the details of Tuesday. A trough moves inland to WA and reinforces the cool air on the west side. Offshore high pressure builds. Low pressure moves into Idaho. Result: lots of wind. Early pressures were 30.11/29.91/29.81 for monster gradients of 0.20 and 0.10. Add in the difference between the offshore high and the inland low for… too much math but additional oomph. Areas between Viento and Doug’s (essentially anywhere under the clouds) will have gusty 25-30 this morning (the Event Site looks like less from my window). East: 30-35 at Rufus and 25-30 at Arlington. Give it a couple hours, and you’ll have 30-35+ all the way from Lyle (if it stays clear) to Arlington. Threemile and Boardman join at 25-30 and eventually build to 30-35. Areas west of The Dalles, or perhaps west of Lyle, drop to the teens this afternoon. High temp today: just 72F for Hood River and 75F for Arlington. If you’re driving out east, remember to stop at Amayah’s Indian Food in Biggs (now on the south side of the road with indoor seating) on your way home!

Moving on to Wednesday… deep clouds stick around all day on the west side, even maybe to The Dalles. This keeps areas to the west of The Dalles under 10mph all day. At dawn, we should have 23-26 from Avery to Boardman. Afternoon wind rises to 26-30 from Avery to Boardman. High temp: 71F.

An unseasonably strong weather system moves in on Thursday. Expect light and variable wind and rain. Yes, rain! Friday also looks light and variable. Saturday could bring mid to upper teens in the afternoon. Sunday: probably windier followed by a lighter stretch to start next week. I’ll be gone Friday-Friday on a retreat, so that almost guarantees wind! Have a great day on the water today. Ride with a buddy and keep them in sight. Be safe! Also, I’m on call tonight, so might not be able to do a forecast tomorrow.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

August 26th is Coach’s memorial at the Ruins and the last day of the River City. It’s also the Music Festival of the Gorge at Ferment Brewing. August 27th is a windsports/watersports fundraiser to support people affected by the Maui Fires. This takes place at Northwave Sails, but is sponsored by lots of local companies. See the wind forecast for details.

There’s a free weekly wing foil orientation at the Hook Thursdays in July and August from 5:30pm to 7:30pm brought to you by Wylde Wind and Water and CGW2. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9am, Max from GoFoil will be teaching flatwater foil pop-up technique at the Event Site. You can demo some GoFoil gear there too! He hopes to also teach bump classes in the afternoon on those days should the Hatch reopen.

Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck above Ferment Brewing.

Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
