Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Those of you who like high wind water sports have been waiting for today and also possibly tomorrow. Today’s the more certain of the two – thunderstorm potential in the desert tomorrow could interfere with our plans. Earlier will be more reliable on Tuesday. We’ll talk more about that in a bit. We then have lighter wind, perhaps mid-20’s on Wednesday, but only in the desert. Thursday and Friday both look light, but guess what? It might rain on Thursday, so let’s rejoice in that not-windy day!

Monday kicks off windy right off the bat. Pressures were 30.08/29.96/29.95 for gradients of 0.12 and E 0.01. Stay west of The Dalles this morning. You’ll find Dawn Patrol at 25-29 from Viento to the Hatchery (maybe to the White Salmon bridge) with 10-13 at Stevenson and teens to the east of Mosier. Westerlies fill in at 28-32+ from Viento to Mosier early, then add launches as far east as Doug’s, then Avery. Rufus joins in the low to mid 20’s by early afternoon. Wait for the Executive Session (after 5pm), and you’ll also have 28-32 from Maryhill to Arlington. Strong westerlies hold all day long in the Corridor and Near East as well. Stevenson maxes out at 26-30. Go anywhere you want for good results. Those of you headed for the Blalock to Arlington downwinder, take note: high temp for Arlington is 97F. Hood River: 83F.

All sorts of weather dynamics happen on Tuesday. Things will be most stable early, so jump on it. Expect 28-32 right off the bat from Viento to Arlington. That said, we’ll have low clouds to Underwood or so and light drizzle west of Wyeth, so the wind will likely be gusty-gusty under those clouds. Nuking Dawn Patrol location: Mosier to Doug’s. Afternoon wind is forecast to drop in the western Gorge as a cold front pushes in and adds clouds and drizzle deeper inland. You’ll need to shift east of Mosier at that point. Models call for 30-35+ from Lyle to Boardman with gusts to 50+. Here’s the thing: models also call for significant atmospheric instability and thunderstorms east of the Cascade Crest, especially way out east in the desert. And… cold fronts tend to result in lowered wind quality or even disappearing wind. So… this is a bit of a tricky situation. That said, there are plenty of signs we’ll have a big, big day on the river – just keep an eye out for thunderheads, and hedge your bets by going early. High temps will be in the low to mid 70’s all the way east to Arlington.

Wednesday brings clouds all the way to the Dalles, at least in the morning. This shifts you eastward for the wind. The western Gorge, west of The Dalles, stays below 15mph all day. East of the Dalles, you’ll find 22-25 in the morning and 24-27 in the afternoon. High temp: low 70’s. Thursday looks rainy with light westerlies, and Friday looks light as well. After that, I’m on retreat for a week or so. Be safe out there today!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

August 26th is Coach’s memorial at the Ruins and the last day of the River City. It’s also the Music Festival of the Gorge at Ferment Brewing. August 27th is a windsports/watersports fundraiser to support people affected by the Maui Fires. This takes place at Northwave Sails, but is sponsored by lots of local companies. See the wind forecast for details.

There’s a free weekly wing foil orientation at the Hook Thursdays in July and August from 5:30pm to 7:30pm brought to you by Wylde Wind and Water and CGW2. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9am, Max from GoFoil will be teaching flatwater foil pop-up technique at the Event Site. You can demo some GoFoil gear there too! He hopes to also teach bump classes in the afternoon on those days should the Hatch reopen.

Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
