Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! In a positive forecast twist, today’s easterlies are now predicted to switch to westerlies in the afternoon. On Sunday, there should be enough wind to get you on the river. Strong westerlies are forecast both Monday and Tuesday as the awaited-for cooldown materializes. It’s worth mentioning that instability will be present all the way through the early part of next week; this could have an impact on wind.

Before we move on to the forecast… make plans to join the fun to support the Island of Maui Sunday at Northwave. Food, raffles, and most importantly – water time! Due to lots of interest, this event is now full-on community supported. Please bring a potluck dish to share along with the dogs n’ such being offered by Northwave. Potluck! Yay! What is this event? It’s the official Maui Fire Relief Hood River fundraiser and community shred session at Northwave. There will be all sorts of fun activities and a raffle. To get raffle tickets ($5 each), go to the GoFundMe for the event and make a donation.

Saturday’s opening ploy is pressures of 29.99/30.01/30.03 for east gradients of 0.02 and 0.02. Easterlies were in the 13-16 range to start the day from Stevenson to Viento. We’ll see a couple or a few hours of this before the wind shuts down and then turns around. You’ll note we didn’t mention Iwash/Rooster Rock. That’s because it’ll be light westerly today. Starting early afternoon, the wind turns westerly. By 5pm, we should have 14-17 from Stevenson to Mosier. Combine that with the heat (low to mid 90’s) and humidity (dewpoint rising to 60F) for a must-join water session. River flow yesterday was 92-165kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 93F.

Sunday’s the Maui Fundraiser at Northwave. There’s a community downwinder from Viento (unsupported) in the morning and a community shred session at the waterfront in the afternoon. Swing by Northwave, make a donation, and get a sparkly streamer to attach to your gear to show your support. Westerlies start the day at 19-22 from Viento to the Hatch and quickly rise to 20-23 from Stevenson to Hood River. They’ll probably dip a bit and turn gustier as instability increases. Still… there should be 17-20 or so from Stevenson to Hood River through the evening unless thunderstorms materialize. High temp: 95F.

An offshore low nudges cool air and marine clouds inland on Monday. We’d sure prefer this came from an offshore high – the wind would be steadier, and the atmosphere would be more stable, but we’ll take it! Current forecast for Monday is 23-26 from Viento to Mosier early with 28-32+ from Stevenson to Rufus midday. Arlington joins in the evening. High temp: 84F and muggy. A frontal system pushes inland on Tuesday. We’ll start with 30mph or so all through the Gorge. As that system moves in, the west side sees the wind drop, and the east side rises to 30-35mph. Wednesday wind looks to be in the mid 20’s. You’ll need to head east of Mosier for the best results; the western Gorge will be cloudy, cool, and may potentially have some sprinkles. As we turn our eyes to the latter half of next week, we see uncertainty in the models. We’ll leave it here for now. Have a great day!

August 27th is a windsports/watersports fundraiser to support people affected by the Maui Fires. This takes place at Northwave Sails, but is sponsored by lots of local companies. See the wind forecast for details.

On Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9am, Max from GoFoil will be teaching flatwater foil pop-up technique at the Event Site. You can demo some GoFoil gear there too! He hopes to also teach bump classes in the afternoon on those days should the Hatch reopen.

Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
