Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Easterlies stick around Friday and Saturday, but the westerlies should be back on Sunday. Strong to very strong westerlies are forecast on Monday and Tuesday. Make plans to join the fun to support the Island of Maui Sunday at Northwave. Due to lots of interest, this event is now full-on community supported. Please bring a potluck dish to share along with the dogs n’ such being offered by Northwave. Potluck! Yay! What is this event? It’s the official Maui Fire Relief Hood River fundraiser and community shred session at Northwave. There will be all sorts of fun activities and a raffle. To get raffle tickets ($5 each), go to the GoFundMe for the event and make a donation.

Now that the thunderstorms have moved through, today’s forecast is relatively straightforward. Easterlies start at 12-15 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Viento. They’ll rise to 20-25 near Stevenson for a few hours before dropping to less than 10mph this afternoon. East of The Dalles, easterlies rise to 5-10mph this afternoon. Near Hood River, the wind will be light and variable. River flow yesterday was 87-163kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 87F.

Saturday starts with easterlies at 10-15 near Iwash (Rooster) Rock, 15-20 near Stevenson, and 10-15 near Viento. The wind rises briefly to 20-25 near Stevenson and falls to light/variable near Iwash. Viento also drops off rapidly. In the afternoon, easterlies will be less than 10mph through the whole Gorge. High temp: 92F with a slight chance of thunder late in the day.

Westerlies return on Sunday as cooler air moves in to the metro area and the hottest temps move east of the Cascades. Models suggest 16-19 early from Viento to Hood River with 20-23 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier or perhaps The Dalles. High temp: 95F. You’ll definitely want to join the potluck/raffle/community shred session at Northwave to benefit wildfire relief on Maui. It’ll be a great and social way to beat the heat and humidity!

Looking at Monday and Tuesday, we don’t have quite the cooldown you were looking for, but it’s going to be more than good enough. Monday should be 27-31+ from Stevenson to Mosier in the morning with strong wind filling in to The Dalles in the afternoon. Strong wind all through the Gorge on Tuesday morning shifts eastward as a weather system moves in. Count on 27-31+ on Tuesday as well. That’s it for today. Have a good one. Stay cool!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

August 26th is Coach’s memorial at the Ruins and the last day of the River City. It’s also the Music Festival of the Gorge at Ferment Brewing. August 27th is a windsports/watersports fundraiser to support people affected by the Maui Fires. This takes place at Northwave Sails, but is sponsored by lots of local companies. There’s a free weekly wing foil orientation at the Hook Thursdays in July and August from 5:30pm to 7:30pm brought to you by Wylde Wind and Water and CGW2. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9am, Max from GoFoil will be teaching flatwater foil pop-up technique at the Event Site. You can demo some GoFoil gear there too! He hopes to also teach bump classes in the afternoon on those days should the Hatch reopen.

Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
