Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! We have a few east wind days on tap with a chance of westerlies, just enough westerlies, on what will be a hot and humid Sunday. I’ll probably take tomorrow off since there’s not much to talk about and also, I’m on call. Before I forget, the event on Sunday at Northwave now includes a potluck! Bring some food to add to the hot dogs being grilled up by Northwave. What is this event? It’s the official Maui Fire Relief Hood River fundraiser and community shred session at Northwave. There will be all sorts of fun activities and a raffle. To get raffle tickets ($5 each), go to the GoFundMe for the event and make a donation.

Thursday’s wind kicks off with 10-15 from Stevenson to Viento with E 20-25 at Rooster. Viento and Stevenson pick up to 15-20, and Rooster holds at 20-25 to early afternoon. Easterlies fall off to 15mph or so west of Swell in the afternoon, rise to 5-10 from Swell to Mosier, and pick up to 10-15 east of Lyle. River flow yesterday was 82-135kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 87F. Fish passage over Bonneville was 6029, for what that’s worth. It’s also worth mentioning that there’s a shot of thunderstorms this evening and overnight.

Friday will be another east wind day, but it’s a day that starts and finishes with thunderstorm chances. This makes it hard to give an accurate or reliable forecast. That doesn’t matter all that much, because models only call for light wind: E 10-15 to start the day from Rooster to Viento, less than 10mph midday on from Rooster to Lyle, and E 10-15 east of The Dalles in the afternoon. High temp: 87F.

Saturday starts with E 10-15 at Stevenson and only at Stevenson. The wind rises to E 20-25 from Stevenson to Viento midday and turns to light westerly, perhaps 5-10mph, perhaps less, in the afternoon. High temp: 93F. Models like the idea of westerlies in the teens on Sunday. Please, please let it be windy – temps will be in the upper 90’s, and it’ll be muggy. Even if it’s not windy, the fun’s still on at Northwave for the Maui fundraiser. Bring a floating object for river playtime. Have a great day!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

August 26th is Coach’s memorial at the Ruins and the last day of the River City. It’s also the Music Festival of the Gorge at Ferment Brewing. August 27th is a windsports/watersports fundraiser to support people affected by the Maui Fires. This takes place at Northwave Sails, but is sponsored by lots of local companies. See the wind forecast for details.

There’s a free weekly wing foil orientation at the Hook Thursdays in July and August from 5:30pm to 7:30pm brought to you by Wylde Wind and Water and CGW2. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9am, Max from GoFoil will be teaching flatwater foil pop-up technique at the Event Site. You can demo some GoFoil gear there too! He hopes to also teach bump classes in the afternoon on those days should the Hatch reopen.

Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck above Ferment Brewing.

Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
