Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Yesterday over-performed, and boy did it overperform well! Nice waves, eh? Hopefully you caught some of the wind between Swell and the Event Site. Given the crowds on the river, it seems like many of you did! We’ll have less wind today than yesterday, but it should still be enough wind to get many of you on the river. This is followed by lighter wind Wednesday, easterlies on Thursday, and an unstable, unreliable day on Friday. For the weekend, models suggest very little wind on Saturday and the potential for more on Sunday, but there’s still a fair bit of uncertainty. Mark your calendars for Sunday the 27th, the official Maui Fire Relief Hood River fundraiser. There will be all sorts of fun activities and a raffle. To get raffle tickets ($5 each), go to the GoFundMe for the event and make a donation.

Let’s look at Tuesday. We have a trough of cool air moving inland, and this will reinforce the western Gorge clouds through early afternoon. Early pressures were 30.04/29.96/29.91 for gradients of 0.08 and 0.05. Those numbers indicate a Mosier-Rufus day, and indeed, the forecast agrees. We’ll have 12-16 most places from Stevenson to Arlington this morning. Gusty 12-16 should hold from Stevenson to Hood River throughout the day as the clouds persist. Viento will overperform, or at least read high, at 15-20. Midday wind rises to 20-23 from Mosier to Rufus. Models like the idea of 22-25ish from Mosier to Rufus this afternoon, but there’s a caveat: instability related to Hurricane Hilary remains in the OR/WA deserts, and this could destabilize the wind field east of The Dalles later today. Best bet is to the west. River flow yesterday was 99-150kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 71F for Hood River and 79F for The Dalles.

A calm and chilly start on Wednesday doesn’t add much as the day goes on. Why? Heat equalizes across the Cascades. Models give us a peak of W 10-13 or a touch more early afternoon before the wind drops back off to the single digits in the evening. High temp: 78F.

Inland high pressure on Thursday combines with a weak low offshore for east wind. You’ll find 20-25 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Viento in the morning. Afternoon wind spreads all through the Gorge. Expect 20-25 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock, 15-20 at Stevenson, 15 at Viento, 5-10 near Hood River, and 10-15 to the east of Hood River. In the evening, a weak weather disturbance approaches. In response, the wind levels out at 15ish all through the Gorge.

That previously mentioned disturbance is set to swing through on Friday. Don’t expect much from the wind – high levels of instability accompany the dynamic system and put us at risk for thunderstorms. Instability persists on the weekend. Models don’t have much in the way of wind for Saturday, but they are more optimistic about Sunday, especially in the afternoon. Fingers crossed. Have a great day today!

Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
