Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! We’re going to keep this Maui wildfire info up for a bit. Forecast is below. Regarding the fire… sending well wishes (or thoughts/prayers) is a nice gesture, but what folks really need right now is cash. If you can afford to do these sports we’re doing, you can afford to send a few hundred bucks to Maui (I did!). Here are a few organizations that could use your support. These organizations are Maui-based and have low overhead, unlike some of the national organizations: Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (https://www.hawaiiancouncil.org/). This organization supports Native Hawaiians. I’ll hold off on the long story of oppression and land grabs in the islands and suggest you make a donation that will specifically support the Native Hawaiian community. You can also donate money to the Maui Food Bank: https://mauifoodbank.org/ . Another worthy organization, especially if you’d like to support LGBTQ+ folks, is the Maui Aids Foundation (they support a lot more communities than folks who are HIV+): https://www.mauiaids.org/ Want to support pets and their owners affected by the fires? https://www.mauihumanesociety.org/ Another good option is to support my friend Dustin (Maui Surfer Girls, female and LGBTQ-owned) and her staff. https://www.gofundme.com/f/maui-surfer-girls-staff-the-lahaina-fire

Ok. Looking at the river forecast for Friday, we’ve got wind! Pressures started at 30.02/29.93/29.91 for gradients of 0.09 and 0.02. Models like the idea of wind, somewhere, all day. We start with 19-22 from Viento the the Hatch with 10-13 pretty much everywhere else including the far eastern Gorge. Stay west of The Dalles today for the best results. Mid-morning wind rises to 22-25 from Viento to Mosier with Stevenson building more slowly. Afternoon wind falls to 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River and rises to 23-26 from Mosier to Avery. River flow yesterday was 99-156kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 83F.

Remember how we previously said no wind for Saturday but a chance of reality overperforming? Well, models decided to overperform, and hopefully reality will follow along! This is pretty common with this particular setup. Anyway, you’ll find Dawn Patrol at 17-20 from Viento to the Hatchery. The wind falls to 13-16 and holds for most of the day with a possible lull late morning. Westerlies extend from Stevenson to Doug’s at 13-16 in the afternoon. High temp: 87F and muggy.

Sunday starts with light east flow or glassy conditions. Easterlies peak at 15mph from Rooster to Viento mid to late morning before fading to 5-10 in the afternoon and spreading eastward to Hood River. High temp: 95F. Monday looks 100 degrees and calm. Models like the idea of westerlies returning on Tuesday with 100 degree temps and sticking around through at least Saturday. Peak wind is likely to be Friday or Saturday, depending on when this ridge of high pressure breaks down and allows cooler air to dominate the west side. In the meantime… prepare for some hot days, hopefully some hot days on the river!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
