Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! The Gorge surprised with a stronger than expected dawn patrol this morning – Viento-to-the-Hatch was reading mid 20’s when I crawled out of bed at sunrise. Get right on it if you want it. The wind is going to fall and turn unreliable this afternoon thanks to instability. We’ll see light wind on Saturday followed by (hopefully) just enough in the evening. Sunday looks windier, but instability could be a problem. Monday and Tuesday hold good potential for the Corridor early and areas as far east as Rufus in the afternoon.

Let’s look at today, shall we. Early pressures were 30.13/30.01/29.99 for gradients of 0.12 and 0.02. Viento to the Hatch were in the 23-26 range at dawn but had dropped to 18-22 by the time I started writing. Locations to the east were mostly in the teens. Models hold the Corridor at 17-20 this morning; expect that range from Stevenson to Mosier through late morning. Everything seems to fall apart this afternoon as instability takes a swipe at the Gorge. You may find some wind in the teens, but you may also find thunder. Hedge your bets and go early if you can. River flow is 97-139kcfss, river temp is 71F, and high temp forecast is 89F.

Instability struggles continue on Saturday, but they wont’ be such a problem as there wont’ be any wind to mess with. Well, not til the evening, anyway! The day starts with 10-13 from Stevenson to the Hatch, but that doesn’t last long. Models take us to “light” midday. Wait. Wait some more. Models like the idea of 14-17 or a touch more from Stevenson to Doug’s for the after-5pm session. Maybe. They’re often overly optimistic. High temp: 88F.

Guess what Sunday brings? Instability! It also brings a better temperature gradient profile. Translation: thermal assistance. Westerlies should be in the low-mid 20’s from Viento to Mosier early (add Stevenson in a few hours). Afternoon: mid 20’s from Lyle to Rufus with upper teens to low 20’s to the west. High temp: 87F and muggy AF. You’ll definitely want to be in the river. As of right now, Monday and Tuesday both bring mid-20’s. Let’s leave it there. Have a great day on the river!

Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
