Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning I’m headed out on a retreat today and will be back with you next Wednesday morning. Looks like a windy weekend, so each of you has to get a little extra time on the water for me! Before we dive into this windy forecast, let’s talk about a couple events: Duotone and Fanatic are having board, foil, and wing demos at the waterfront park today from 10 to 5. Tonight at the Ruins (time not provided to me), the Big Air Kite League is showing a pre-screening of their Docuseries. Tadka Indian food cart in The Dalles has Bollywood Nights happening. I may have written it down wrong… I can’t remember if it’s tonight and tomorrow or tomorrow and Sunday. Either way, sounds fun!

Let’s look at the wind. Friday starts off with your wind forecaster typing as fast as possible so they can get on the water before leaving town. Pressures started with 30.08/30.00/29.98 for gradients of 0.08 and 0.02. That should be enough… and indeed… we have 13-16ish from Viento to The Hook with single digits or low double digits everywhere else. We’ll have another one of those shift-east sorts of days as the metro area heats up this afternoon. Expect a quick build to 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier this morning with 11-14 near Rufus. The shift happens by noon. West of Mosier, the wind falls to 14-17. Mosier hangs on for a little longer, and then it too drops to 14-17. We’ll see the Lyle to Doug’s stretch climb to 21-24 early to mid afternoon. Models hint that we’ll see a touch more late: 23-26 from Lyle to (maybe) Rufus. I’d guess the low end of that is most likely. River flow yesterday was 113-198kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 84F.

Saturday starts off with marine clouds to Cascade Locks. Hooray! That’s an excellent start. We (I mean you, because I”ll be meditating) open the day with westerlies at 22-25 from Viento to Mosier with 11-14 near Rowena and 16-19 from Avery to Arlington. Westerlies build to 25-28 from Viento to Mosier with 22-25 from Lyle to Doug’s and 16-19 out east for the midday, post-coffee, post-brunch session. Stevenson will take extra time thanks to the clouds. It eventually rises to 20-23 once the clouds burn off. Models hint that our shift east just might leave Hood River windy Saturday. Let’s go with 20-23 from Stevenson to the Hatch with 25-28 from Hood River to Doug’s early afternoon. Wait just a touch longer, and you’ll find 26-30 from Hood River or Mosier to Arlington. Very nice. High temp: 82F.

Sunday opens with deeper clouds in the Stevenson area for a light start between there and Viento. Swell to Mosier kick off Sunday with 22-25. East to Arlington, you’ll find 18-22. Afternoon wind rises to 25-28 from Mosier to Arlington. Depending on the marine clouds, there could be a short (1-2 hour) period of 25-28 from Viento to Hood River as well. More than likely, Stevenson to Hood River will be in the 17-20 range most of the day, but it’s two days out as I write this, and things are likely to change.

Looking at the extended forecast, we see this forecaster still meditating and likely being distracted by thoughts of SUP foiling. Monday: 15-18, midday lull, 15-18. Tuesday: light early. 21-24 in the afternoon. Wednesday: windier, but there’s just not enough model agreement that far out to really pin that day down. Ensembles hint at stronger wind later next week. That is all. I’ll see you on the flip side!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands will close due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
