Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! After an ass-kicking week at work, I’m ready to shred, and the Gorge is ready to provide. I’ll be taking off on retreat after a quick forecast tomorrow morning. But don’t panic. You don’t need me. Models are pretty clear on what will happen through Tuesday. I’ll be back late on Wednesday and here to serve you Thursday. And no, my housesitters cannot provide wind forecasts for you in the meantime!

Let’s look at Thursday. It’s gorgeous out there – cool, breezy, and sunny. Pressures at 7am were 30.05/29.97/29.96 for gradients of 0.08 and 0.01. Westerlies were in the 15-18 range from Viento to The Hook, 5-10 near Stevenson, and 10-13 to the east of Mosier. Hey, did y’all know that I can see the Columbia from my window? That’s what makes me qualified to do a wind forecast! We’ll see the wind build briefly to 20-23 from Viento to Mosier this morning before it drops in the west and picks up to the east. Afternoon wind should be 20-23 near Stevenson, 14-17 from Viento to Hood River, 21-24 from Mosier to Doug’s, and 19-22 near Rufus. Arlington will be 10mph or so. It appears that SR-14 has reopened east of the intersection of 97, but the Newell Road Fire is still active (60,000 acres) to the east. Avoid the Roosevelt area for now. River flow yesterday was 110-188kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 82F.

Friday looks like another moderately breezy, sunny day. Let’s all get some dawn patrol before I leave on retreat! The day opens cool (less than 60), sunny, and breezy. You’ll find westerlies at 17-20 from Viento to Mosier for your dawn patrol. Stevenson: 7-10, as per usual. From Lyle to Arlington, the day opens with 12-15mph. Mid-morning wind fades a bit out east and rises to 21-24 from Stevenson to Hood River with 17-20 at Mosier. Afternoon: 21-24 at Stevenson, 15-18 from Viento to Hood River, 21-24 from Mosier to Doug’s, and 13-16 near Rufus. Less to the east. High temp: 84F.

A bit more marine layer to the west on Saturday thanks to a low near BC sets the Gorge up for a windier day. That low will be close enough to send reinforcing cool air to the west side during the day. Gorge winds jump right on this train and add some speed from thermal gradient support. The day opens with 5-10 at Stevenson, 22-25 from Viento to Mosier, 13-16 near Rowena, and 19-22 from Avery to Arlington. Wait a couple hours, and you’ll find 20-23 at Stevenson, 25-28 from Viento to Doug’s, and 22-25 east to Arlington. Afternoon wind rises to 26-30 from Mosier to Threemile. High temp: 81F.

Models call for another moderately strong day on Sunday. The deterministic GFS maxes out at 23-26, but the ensembles hint at more. Either way, it’s worth making plans to be on the river. Warmer air on the west side on Monday knocks down the thermal support. Westerlies should be in the upper teens. Inland ridging on Tuesday hints at a light and variable day. Models then show a fair bit of spread (about 10 degrees range in the forecast highs) starting Wednesday. An accurate forecast becomes impossible at this point, but I’ve decided it’ll be windy every day starting Wednesday through the rest of the summer. Because that’s what I like. And you do too. Have a great day on the river today!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands will close due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
