Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Yesterday’s cold front packed more of a punch than expected and destroyed the wind quality. You know, like a bull in a china shop. We’re in a stable post-frontal environment today, so the wind should be steadier. Cool air has shifted way out east, and that’ll knock down the potential for thermal gradients. A lighter day tomorrow gives way to stronger wind both Thursday and Friday. After that, I’m outa here for a few days for a retreat. Do not bother the housesitters – they can’t forecast wind! Also: stay away from Roosevelt. There’s a large wildfire in that region of the Gorge.

Let’s look at today: a deep marine push overnight has Hood River under the clouds. While pleasant, it’s not all that conducive to wind! Pressures at 7am were 30.17/30.10/30.09 for gradients of 0.07 and 0.01. Not all that much, right? We start the day with 7-10mph most locations, and that means all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. From Stevenson to Hood River, the day started reflective of the gradients with 14-17mph. Give the desert some time to heat. We’ll see 17-20 by midday from Mosier to Rufus with low double digits (12-15 at best) from Stevenson to Swell. Areas east of Rufus will rise to 12-15 or so by late morning. Clouds burn off in the afternoon, and the desert warms like cookies in a Ziploc on a dashboard. As you may have guessed, this is a good thing! Westerlies rise to 21-24 from Lyle to Rufus with 17-20 at Arlington. IN the western Gorge, the loss of clouds leads to gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier. River flow yesterday was 103-159kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 79F.

Wednesday looks like a lighter day. A weak low offshore combines with weak high pressure inland for… not much at all. The day starts with very light westerlies between Rooster Rock and Viento with nearly calm wind to the east. Not much happens in the morning. Go for a bike ride or work in the garden! Westerlies rise to 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River, maybe to Mosier, in the afternoon and hold through the Executive Session.

Offshore conditions bring more potential on Thursday as does a better heat forecast for the desert. The day starts with 19-22 or perhaps 21-24 from Viento to Hood River Stevenson will be in the single digits early. It likes to sleep in! Midday wind does a little shift eastward as a disturbance in the force runs from north to south down the coast. At this time, you’ll find 14-`7 from Stevenson to Hood River with 21-24 from Mosier to Avery and 11-14 at Rufus. East: light for now… Afternoon westerlies hold in the teens from Stevenson to Mosier and rise to 23-26 from Lyle to Rufus. Arlington: 17-20. Stronger wind is forecast on Friday, naturally, because I’ll be leaving. We then turn to the ensembles for the weekend forecast. Ensembles say… westerlies in the Corridor at 20mph or better. Come on down! Have a great day today – enjoy the cooler weather!

Cycling

All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is under a level 3 evacuation order. That probably means Gunsight is closed at this time. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! Logging is happening on Hospital Hill. This means you cannot make a full circle – there is no connection between the front side and back side. You could ride Bad Wolf and Millennium as a loop. You can ride Roll Baby Roll and Triple Bypass as a loop. You cannot access Treehugger/Crazy Fingers at this time. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
