Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! We’re 24 hours out from the Gorge Paddle Challenge, and there are lots of stoked visitors planning on downwinders today. You too may want to consider that plan. If I weren’t on call today, I’d be doing the Viento run. Busy today? You’ll have wind every day through at least Monday. Yay!

Let’s look at Thursday. A weak disturbance overnight dragged marine clouds into the inland west. Our early pressures were 30.14/30.01/30.00 (gradients 0.13/0.01) which hints at a Corridor day. Sure, and you’ll probably get some bonus action near Amayah’s Indian food cart (Biggs) later. We start with 25ish from Viento to Hood River and perhaps Mosier with 14-17 at Stevenson and 14-17 from Lyle to Arlington. The wind holds at 24-27 from Viento to Mosier all day with Stevenson joining in a few hours at the low end of the 24-27 range. We could see the Stevenson-Mosier stretch drop to 22-25 this afternoon, but that’s still “windy”. Lyle, Rowena, and Doug’s join this afternoon at 25-28. From Avery to Rufus, you’ll find 21-24 from mid to late afternoon on through the evening. River flow yesterday was 114-202kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 88F.

Friday sees a deeper marine push – this one actually make it into the Gorge, perhaps as far east at Stevenson, perhaps not quite. Thanks to that, and thanks to continued heat in the desert, we’ve got another solid day on tap. Dawn Patrol welcomes you with 26-29 from Viento to Mosier, 10-13 at Stevenson, and 19-22 from Lyle to Arlington. That’s probably the strongest wind of the day; the gradients will spread out a bit and embrace more beaches into the fold. Midday wind will be 24-27 from Stevenson to Mosier with 20-23 from Lyle to Avery and 14-17 out east. Afternoon: 23-26 from Stevenson to Rufus with 17-20 at Arlington. High temp: 86F for Hood River, 96F for Arlington.

Saturday sees a weak disturbance approach, and that’ll dampen the speed and quality and sustainability of the wind field just a bit. Dawn Patrol will be 15-18 from Viento to Swell. That’s followed by a brief period of low 20’s from Stevenson to Mosier. After that, the corridor drops to the teens and the Mosier to Arlington stretch rises to 24-27. High temp: 86F for Hood River, 93F for Arlington. Stronger wind is forecast for Sunday and potentially Monday as the marine air influence increases and high temps shave off a few degrees each day. It’s going to be a nice five day stretch. See you on the river!

Cycling

All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is under a level 3 evacuation order. That probably means Gunsight is closed at this time. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! Logging is happening on Hospital Hill. This means you cannot make a full circle – there is no connection between the front side and back side. You could ride Bad Wolf and Millennium as a loop. You can ride Roll Baby Roll and Triple Bypass as a loop. You cannot access Treehugger/Crazy Fingers at this time. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
