Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Hopefully you made the most of your rest day yesterday. I did not rest! Much of today will hold the potential for rest as the river stays calm. Models are holding out some hope for the Executive Session should cool air filter into the metro area early enough. If not, don’t despair: the next five days, at a minimum, will be plenty windy. Just a note: I’m on call tonight through tomorrow evening. If I get called tonight, it’s unlikley I’ll be able to do a forecast tomorrow.

Wednesday starts off sunny and glassy with pressures of 30.06/30.06/30.09 for gradients of 0.00 and E0.03. Winds are light and variable all through the Gorge with the exception of easterlies at 10mph or so near Stevenson. By mid-morning, the wind goes completely calm. Around 5pm, models suggest westerlies will arrive from Rooster to Stevenson at 10mph or so. Those same models indicate a 0.09 gradient from Portland to The Dalles this evening. That would be enough, on a good day, for 17-20 or so, but let’s be less optimistic. How about 14-17 from Stevenson to Mosier with 11-14 from Lyle to Doug’s after 5pm? River flow yesterday was 113-186kcfs, river temp is 71F, and high temp forecast is 96F.

On Thursday, the desert looks hotter and the metro area looks cooler. Offshore high pressure joins the picture. Dawn Patrol should be in the 24-27 range from Viento to Mosier with 18-22 from Lyle to Arlington. Stevenson: 12-15 or so. Midday westerlies rise to 23-26 at Stevenson, 26-29 from Viento to Doug’s, 22-25 at Avery and 14-17 at Rufus. Evening wind spreads all the way from Viento to Rufus at 26-29 with 20-23 near Stevenson and 14-17 near Arlington. High temp: 90F for Hood River and 99F for Arlington.

Not much changes between Thursday and Friday. We’ll end the workweek with 26-29 dawn patrol from Viento to Mosier with 22-25 east to Arlington. Afternoon gradients spread out a bit and indicate a range of 24-28 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. High temp: 88F for Hood River. For the extended forecast, there’s some variation in the ensembles. Let’s call it mid 20’s, minimum, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Temps remain in the 80’s for this time period. Enjoy!

This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is under a level 3 evacuation order. That probably means Gunsight is closed at this time. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! Logging is happening on Hospital Hill. This means you cannot make a full circle – there is no connection between the front side and back side. You could ride Bad Wolf and Millennium as a loop. You can ride Roll Baby Roll and Triple Bypass as a loop. You cannot access Treehugger/Crazy Fingers at this time. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
