Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Thursday, everyone. Despite a solid gradient to start the day, the wind is playing silly games. Everywhere but Viento is calm or not-westerly to start things off. That’s not how things will stay today. Westerlies return. Once they settle in today, they’re set to blow and blow and blow and blow through the extended forecast. Models are insistent and consistent in making Monday out to be a monster (naturally – I’m scheduled to work), so if you’re into a nuking day, clear Monday. Also of note, Kiteboard for Cancer is Friday-Sunday at the Event Site. It’s not too late to sign up, and it’s certainly going to be a windy one this year! In the meantime…

Thursday starts with pressures of 29.92/29.84/29.86 for gradients of 0.08 and E 0.02. You’ll notice the low pressure in Portland (or maybe you didn’t). This setup is a bit unusual – we don’t have the massive offshore high, and the trough is a bit far out in the offshore waters to call it “Classic”. Deets aside, we’ll still have wind. Westerlies fill in at 20-23 or so from Viento to Hood River by mid-morning. Stevenson won’t be far behind. Afternoon westerlies do the classic “shift east” as instability breaks the cap in the west. Expect the wind to drop to 14-17 from Viento to Mosier this afternoon. Stevenson should hold at 20-23, and the Mosier-Doug’s stretch (maybe, maybe not for Avery) rises to 22-25. River flow yesterday was 124-192kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 93F. Notes: the Hatch and Swell remain inaccessible due to the fire closures. GoFoil has a flatwater paddle clinic and SUP foil demos from 9-11 today at the Event Site.

On Friday, the cross-Cascade temp gradient increases, and so do the westerlies. We’ll have 23-26+ from Viento to Mosier to start with 13-16+ at Stevenson and 13-16 from Lyle to Arlington. Midday wind builds to 25-28 from Stevenson to Doug’s. Rufus joins at 23-26 in the afternoon, and locations west of Lyle drop to 20-23. High temp: 88F for Hood River. Hotter out east. Heading to Rufus? Don’t forget to stop at Amayah’s for Indian food in Biggs!

Saturday looks just plain windy all day long. 27-30 from Viento to Mosier early and 27-30 from Stevenson to Arlington later. High temp: 86F. Sunday’s forecast is currently 25-28. Monday: 30-33+. Normally I wouldn’t be banking on a forecast that strong that far out, but the ensembles have been insistent and continue to be insistent that this will play out. Those models probably took a look at my work schedule!

Cycling

How much rain do you need to make brown pow out of dust? Somewhere between 0.1” and 0.25”. When’s it gonna happen? Who the heck knows? Did it rain on the 44 trail system over the last few days? Go check it out and tell me! Logging is happening on Hospital Hill on the trail between the top of Roll Baby Roll and the Bench. This means you cannot make a full circle. You could ride Bad Wolf and Millennium as a loop. You can ride Roll Baby Roll and Triple Bypass as a loop. You cannot access Treehugger at this time. Post is clear of snow to the top. Dog River and Surveyor’s are clear. Bottle Prairie, 8 Mile, Underhill, Cedar Creek, Lower Cooks, and Super Connector are open and already dusty. Fifteenmile is rideable. Super Duper Connector is open. Nestor Peak is clear of snow. The USFS website says that Lewis River is open and clear. The Forest Loop above Trout Lake is open as is the mixed surface Sleeping Beauty/8810 loop. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

You have an unusual solstice-week opportunity. With the clouds and the chance of drizzle and the cool temps, you have a perfect opportunity to sow seeds. Replace your lettuce. Drop in another round of cilantro. Add some arugula. Carve out a little trench for some carrots. Water them, and you might just get away with once-a-day watering through Monday. It’s also a decent time to add some plants to your garden. They’ll prefer this gentle start to a harsh, hot-weather transplant. Happy gardening.
