Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone, and happy Juneteenth! We’re looking at our last strong wind day for a bit, so get it, and then get ready to rest up for the next round. Monday’s kicking off with pressures of 29.94/29.86/29.81 for gradients of .08 and .05. This in indicative of the Lyle to Rufus stretch, once again. With instability in the picture, the steadiest wind is likely to be in the morning before the sun’s had it’s way with the surface. You’ll find 25-28 pretty much all day long from Avery to Arlington, although the wind is likely to become more gusty in the afternoon. The Lyle to Doug’s stretch will be affected by marine air; expect gusty 20-25 there all day. Between Stevenson and Hood River, the wind will be gusty and in the 14-17 range or so. Mosier has a chance of 23-26 despite being under the clouds. Why? Because it’s Mosier! River flow yesterday was 160-201kcfs, river temp is 64F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 60F.

A weak weather system will move through on Tuesday. Also in the cards… a weak trough along the coast between us and our usually supportive northeast Pacific high pressure. In other words, gradients won’t have much to offer. The wind starts at 18-22 from Avery to Arlington. Western Gorge: less than 10mph. Midday wind drops to 14-17 out east and rises to 12-15 from Stevenson to Doug’s. In the afternoon, the wind levels off at 11-14 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. High temp: 61F.

Wednesday’s forecast currently looks like this: calm. Thursday: easterlies at 20mph or so. Better conditions are possible on Friday as hot weather in Idaho combines with cool air on the west side. Current forecast is west 26-30, but that’s subject to change. There’s a fair bit of uncertainty about next weekend, so let’s leave it for now. Have a fabulous day on the river!

Now, because I don’t have enough time to sit at a swap meet, I’ll have a virtual swap meet! For sale are various fabulous items for various sports. 1) 4.3 (brand new) and 3.5 (used twice) Takuma RS wings. $550 for the 4.3 and $500 for the 3.5. 2) PPC Link downwind SUP foil (could also be wing board). 6’4”/24”/118L. $850. 3) 2010 Starboard Quad 71L x 2. One in excellent shape: $150. One scratched up but just fine: $100. 4) Small Fiberspar carbon boom. Old. $50. You know how to reach me if you’re interested. Help me get this stuff out of my storage shed so I have room for my new stuff!

Cycling

How much rain do you need to make brown pow out of dust? Somewhere between 0.1” and 0.25”. Logging is happening on Hospital Hill on the trail between the top of Roll Baby Roll and the Bench. This means you cannot make a full circle. You could ride Bad Wolf and Millennium as a loop. You can ride Roll Baby Roll and Triple Bypass as a loop. You cannot access Treehugger at this time. Post is clear of snow to the top. Dog River and Surveyor’s are clear. Bottle Prairie, 8 Mile, Underhill, Cedar Creek, Lower Cooks, and Super Connector are open and already dusty. Fifteenmile is rideable. Super Duper Connector is open. Nestor Peak is clear of snow. The USFS website says that Lewis River is open and clear. The Forest Loop above Trout Lake is open as is the mixed surface Sleeping Beauty/8810 loop. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

You have an unusual solstice-week opportunity. With the clouds and the chance of drizzle and the cool temps, you have a perfect opportunity to sow seeds. Replace your lettuce. Drop in another round of cilantro. Add some arugula. Carve out a little trench for some carrots. Water them, and you might just get away with once-a-day watering through Monday. It’s also a decent time to add some plants to your garden. They’ll prefer this gentle start to a harsh, hot-weather transplant. Happy gardening.
