Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy swap meet (at Windance) Sunday, everyone! We have another windy day on tap today, a slightly less windy one planned tomorrow, and slightly less than that for Tuesday. Your rest day is penciled in for Wednesday. If you’re heading out on the river over the next three days, take the high temps into account: it’ll be in the upper 50’s for the western Gorge and mid 60’s out east. That’s chilly for this time of year!

Sunday starts off with a swap meet at Windance and continues with wind out east and rain in the west. Yes, really! Early pressures were 29.95/29.87/29.79 for gradients of 0.08 and 0.08. That says “go east”. An incoming weather system this afternoon has a good chance of disrupting the wind field, so get it early. East of The Dalles is your best bet today for 27-31 from Avery (where it was nuking last night) to Threemile. The western Gorge is probably going to hang in the gusty 13-16 range, but it’s adding rain midday. Skip it. The Lyle to Rowena launches will be under the marine layer; you’ll find gusty 20-23 there until the rain arrives. At that point, expect low teens. It’s worth noting that Maryhill section is probably “the right direction” this morning, but will likely shift as this weather system approaches. When the wind turns “wrong”, head to Amayah’s Indian food cart at Biggs to soothe your soul. River flow yesterday was 155-201kcfs, river temp is 64F, and high temp forecast is 59F for Hood River and 65F for Maryhill.

You’ll be heading east for your Juneteenth wind as the western Gorge stays pretty socked in. In the west, you’ll find 7-10 in the morning and 11-14 in the afternoon with a chance of gusty 15-18 late afternoon into the evening. Out east, the day starts with 11-14 or so. Late morning brings 24-27 from Avery to Arlington. Models nudge the wind upwards from Lyle to Doug’s ahead of a weather system in the evening; you’ll have gusty 23-26 there for an hour or two. Again, it’s a day best spent east of The Dalles. High temps will be similar to Sunday’s – chilly for this time of year!

Tuesday starts out in a weird way for mid June; it starts rainy with calm wind! Westerlies pick up to 22-25 from Avery to Threemile in the afternoon and stay under 10mph west of The Dalles. High temp: just 57F – three degrees below the record for the date! If all this wind talk is making you tired, think about Wednesday. The forecast is for nearly-calm wind and temps in the low 70’s. Nice day for something other than wind sports, in other words, it’s going to be a great day for a rest. Let’s leave it there for now. Have a great day on the river.

Now, because I don’t have enough time to sit at a swap meet, I’ll have a virtual swap meet! For sale are various fabulous items for various sports. 1) 4.3 (brand new) and 3.5 (used twice) Takuma RS wings. $550 for the 4.3 and $500 for the 3.5. 2) PPC Link downwind SUP foil (could also be wing board). 6’4”/24”/118L. $850. 3) 2010 Starboard Quad 71L x 2. One in excellent shape: $150. One scratched up but just fine: $100. 4) Small Fiberspar carbon boom. Old. $50. You know how to reach me if you’re interested. Help me get this stuff out of my storage shed so I have room for my new stuff!

Cycling

How much rain do you need to make brown pow out of dust? Somewhere between 0.1” and 0.25”. Maybe late this weekend or early next week! Post is clear of snow to the top. Dog River and Surveyor’s are clear. Bottle Prairie, 8 Mile, Underhill, Cedar Creek, Lower Cooks, and Super Connector are open and already dusty. Fifteenmile is rideable. Super Duper Connector is open. There is still snow on a short section of Surveyor’s between the Cooks Meadow intersection and Dog River. Nestor Peak is clear of snow. The USFS website says that Lewis River is open and clear. Falls Creek isn’t even close! The Forest Loop above Trout Lake is open as is the mixed surface Sleeping Beauty/8810 loop.

Cows are out of Hospital Hill. Dogs can return for their annual dose of ticks and poison oak. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Starting today, you have an unusual solstice-week opportunity. With the clouds and the chance of drizzle and the cool temps, you have a perfect opportunity to sow seeds. Replace your lettuce. Drop in another round of cilantro. Add some arugula. Carve out a little trench for some carrots. Water them, and you might just get away with once-a-day watering through Monday. It’s also a decent time to add some plants to your garden. They’ll prefer this gentle start to a harsh, hot-weather transplant. Happy gardening.
