Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Monday morning, and for some of you, there’s just enough wind to get you on the river for Dawn Patrol. Another option today: rest day. Why? Because the next two days look very, very windy! How windy? Well, NWS issued a wind advisory for Arlington. That’s rare. After the next two days, we continue with no-less-than moderate westerlies all the way through the weekend.

Monday starts off with mid teens between Viento and Arlington with the exception of the stretch from Hood River to Doug’s, where the wind is 10ish. Stevenson is less than 10mph to start the day. We’ll see the wind hang in the 14-17 range from Viento to Swell early. Stevenson gets added in right quick. Westerlies slowly build into the evening as onshore flow keeps the metro area cooler than the Gorge. By mid-afternoon, you’ll find 18-21 from Stevenson to Doug’s. Evening: 21-24ish from Stevenson to Doug’s. River flow yesterday was 151-179kcfs, river temp is 64F, and high temp forecast is 88F.

Tuesday kicks off with marine clouds and chilly air in Portland and sunshine and warmth out east. Ensembles are in remarkable agreement about what will happen – you can take a look at the TATAS forecast for the visual. Dawn Patrol should be in the 25-29+ range from Viento to Doug’s with 20-23 at Rufus and teens to the east. As a cold front, a dry one, slams into the west side and keeps temps down, the wind rises to the “nuking” range, potentially after a small break as the front actually passes. Wondering if you should go? Laura would go! Westerlies build throughout the day and eventually settle in at 30-40 all the way from Stevenson to Threemile. Boardman: 30ish. Windiest spots? Probably anywhere between Rowena and Arlington. Looking for less wind? Go early. High temp Hood River: 75F. Arlington: 82F with a wind advisory posted. If you’re heading out east, consider camping. You’ll have a second shot at those far-east locations on Wednesday. Also, if you’re heading out east, don’t forget to stop for lunch or dinner at the Amayah’s Indian food cart just east of Biggs. Head south across the bridge, take a left at the gas stations, and go about 150 yards. It’s on the left.

Deeper marine clouds march in on Tuesday night. They make it past Stevenson, past Hood River, and maybe even past The Dalles. The day starts with 23-26 from Viento to Arlington with low teens at Stevenson. By midday, the wind picks up to 28-32 from Stevenson to Arlington with 26-30 from Threemile to Boardman. Westerlies hold until you just can’t do it anymore. You know, until sunset.

Thursday will feel mellow compared to Tuesday and Wednesday: westerlies peak in the low 20’s. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will all be 20+, but the exact details aren’t clear. At this point, Sunday has the most potential for upper 20’s; about half the ensembles are pointing at that outcome. To get it, you’ll be driving east of Hood River and probably farther east than that. Cooler, cloudier, less windy, potentially damp weather is forecast to start next week. Whew. That’s a lot of west wind! Enjoy!

Cycling

How much rain do you need to make brown pow out of dust? Somewhere between 0.1” and 0.25”. Maybe late this weekend or early next week! Post is clear of snow to the top. Dog River and Surveyor’s are clear. Bottle Prairie, 8 Mile, and Super Connector are open and already dusty. Fifteenmile is rideable. Super Duper Connector is open. There is still snow on a short section of Surveyor’s between the Cooks Meadow intersection and Dog River. Nestor Peak is clear of snow. The USFS website says that Lewis River is open and clear. Falls Creek isn’t even close! The Forest Loop above Trout Lake is open as is the mixed surface Sleeping Beauty/8810 loop.

Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

All that weeding you’ve (I’ve) been putting off will get done in the next week or so! Weeds (especially those that haven’t gone to seed) are nitrogen for your compost. Mix them in with some browns, and you’ll have a hot, quick pile fired up in no time at all!
