Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning! You probably noticed that the website was down for a couple of days. That was because I forgot to pay the bill. But it’s a good reminder that this forecast and this website have costs. And it takes me over an hour each day to put together this forecast. Please take the time to make a donation above. If you’re here, this is important to you. Without your support, it can’t keep going. It’s only here because of the generosity of those who support it. So please, before you read the forecast, scroll back up and shoot me a contribution via paypal (twomirrors@gmail.com) or Venmo (@thegorgeismygym). You can also send check or cash via USPS: Temira @ PO Box 841, Hood River, OR 97031. Thank you for your support!

Happy Saturday! We’re heading into a very strong windy stretch; just one morning out of the next five or so gives you a chance to rest. We’ll dive into the details below, but make sure you are well rested for Tuesday and Wednesday, because they both hold the potential for nukage.

Ok, back to the present moment… Marine clouds are deeper than forecast, farther east than forecast (The Dalles) and will likely stick around for much of the day in the west. That means we need to (mostly) toss out the operational GFS and rely on gut instinct. Early pressures were 30.07/29.97/29.93 for gradients of 0.10 and 0.04. High pressure is hanging offshore, and desert heat will outpace metro area heating today.

We’ll start with 17-21 from Viento to Swell with 14-17 near Stevenson and from Hood River to Arlington. Let the desert heat for best results. The operational GFS tells us we’ll have 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles midday with 23-26 in the afternoon. It also says 11-14 out east. I’m going to veer from that prediction due to the clouds. Yes, the wind should pick up between Stevenson and The Dalles as the clouds burn off, but it’s probably going to be gusty and less reliable than sunnier zones. Call it 20-24ish. While our friendly model doesn’t have the wind blowing east of The Dalles, I’m going with 24-27 from Avery to Rufus this afternoon and 20-23 at Arlington. Maybe more. River flow yesterday was 179-206kcfs, river temp is 63F, and high temp forecast is 77F (probably not, actually!). Caveat: this forecast is nearly completely based on gut instinct!

Moving on to Sunday… we start the day light and variable and mostly clear. Not much happens in the morning. Go ride a bike or work in your garden. In the afternoon, westerlies rise to 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier with 15-18 from Lyle to The Dalles. Eastern Gorge: light and variable. High temp: 87F. Ah, nice and warm. Nice day for winging!

A really nice heat low sets up in the desert on Monday afternoon, and this brings stronger wind. The day starts with 18-21 from Viento to Hood River and rises to 24-28 in the afternoon as far east as Rufus. Cooler air surges in to the west side on Tuesday. Combine that with heat in the desert for a truly nuking day of 30-35+. Models are all in on this one. They also like the idea of 27-31+ on Wednesday. That is all for now. Have a fabulous day!

Cycling

Post is clear of snow to the top. Dog River and Surveyor’s are clear per my friend who rode them on 5/27. Bottle Prairie, 8 Mile, and Super Connector are open and already dusty. Super Duper Connector is open. There is still snow on a short section of Surveyor’s between the Cooks Meadow intersection and Dog River. Nestor Peak is clear of snow. Falls Creek isn’t even close! Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: I was wandering around my garden yesterday and notice there’s some tomato pruning that needs to happen. That inspired me to ask ChatGPT, “How do I grow giant tomato plants?” The AI says: fertilize regularly, prune the lowest leaves (to prevent disease), put plants at least two feet apart, water deeply and infrequently, and mulch to prevent spores in the ground from getting to your plants and also to keep the soil moist. Lastly, use companion plants such as dill, marigolds, nasturtiums, sweet alyssum, and others. Plants like company too.
