Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Monday, everyone! Yesterday worked out pretty well, and there was actually somewhere with “the right direction” of wind – Doug’s. We’ll continue with westerlies of some sort for much of this week, but things are probably going to be pretty gusty at least through Wednesday. Stronger wind is possible Thursday and Friday in the latest model runs. Let’s see if that holds!

For Monday, we’ll see a weak offshore low dissipate and leave us with offshore high pressure late in the day. This results in an up-and-down morning and a steadier evening. 6am pressures were 29.89/29.81/29.74 for gradients of .08 and .07. Westerlies were generally in the upper teens to low 20’s with 10ish from Lyle to Doug’s. By mid-morning, the wind will even out at 14-17 or so from Stevenson to Arlington. Afternoon wind drops to 7-10 out east, 17-20 near Rufus, and rises to steadier 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles. River flow yesterday was 152-183kcfs, river temp is 52F, and high temp forecast is 63F.

Tuesday will have gusty, up-and-down westerlies, high clouds, and a slight chance of afternoon thunder. The wind kicks off with 20-23 from Stevenson to Hood River with calm wind to the east. Models suggest the wind will drop below 10mph midday before returning at gusty 17-20 from Viento to Rufus in the afternoon. Stevenson: 11-14. Eastern Gorge: light. High temp will be 80F and muggy.

Instability is likely to mess with the picture on Wednesday. The day starts with 15-18 from Stevenson to Hood River and slowly builds to 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier in the evening. Elevated thunderstorms are possible. These tend to have less impact on the wind than do surface-based storms. That said, once a storm gets close, outflow wind and lightning and rain will drive you from the river. High temp: 80F and muggy. Instability lessens Thursday and Friday and potentially allows for stronger westerlies. Maybe. Let’s wait and see. Have a great day!

That race benefits local fire departments. May 6th is also the Repair Cafe at Gorge Makerspace. May 20th is the Gardener’s Faire plant sale at Rockford Grange. June 10th is the Gorge Adventure Race in White Salmon. Multi-discipline = multi-sport day.

Cycling

There’s going to be a lot of brown pow out there this week. Go get it! Post is snow-free at least to the top of Borderline. Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: Mt. Defiance says you shouldn’t plant your tomatoes, but if you’re below 500-1000′, Hood River Weather and TATAS thinks planting tomatoes this week is a good idea. It’s also time (for me, anyway) to get your beans started indoors. They generally do better direct-sow, but they also generally get eaten by slugs if I do that. If you’re a planner (I generally am not), consider starting next year’s compost pile now. This is ag country, and there’s a lot of manure looking for a good home. Happy gardening.
