Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s a drizzly morning on Mt. Hood, and thanks to a warm atmospheric river, it will only get warmer and wetter today. Rain continues on Monday and switches to snow late Monday night. Flurries early Tuesday give way to afternoon sunshine. Flurries return on Wednesday. Dry weather is likely Thursday into Friday, and warmer temps are possible but not certain for the weekend.

Sunday will be wet all day, and models are likely underestimating the amount of rain the mountain will pick up. They tend to do that in these stronger atmospheric rivers. The snow level will be 6000′ early but will quickly rise to 10,000′ and hold. About half an inch of rain is forecast during the day. Another half an inch or more is expected overnight. Wind: SW 25-35 in the morning, SW 30-45 in the afternoon, and SSW 20-30 after midnight.

Rain kicks off the day on Monday. It sticks around until the evening when we’ll see a transition to snow. Most of the precip will fall as not-snow, sadly. The snow level will be 10,000′ in the morning, 8000′ in the afternoon, 3000′ in the evening, and 1500′ after midnight. About 0.3”+ rain is forecast during the day. Another 0.4” water equivalent (WE) falls as mixed precip in the evening. Overnight, 0.2” WE falls as snow for a couple inches of new. Wind: SSW 20-30 early, SW 30-40 in the afternoon, WSW 20-25 in the evening, and WSW 25-30 after midnight.

Light snow Tuesday morning gives way to sunshine in the afternoon and light snow again after midnight. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning, 2000-2500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ after midnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast in the morning. Call that a couple inches of powder. Same overnight. Wind: WSW 25-30 in the morning, W 20-25 in the afternoon, and S/SW 5-15 overnight.

A few flurries are forecast on Wednesday. Dry weather is almost certain on Thursday and perhaps through the weekend. Models are coalescing around a dry, warmer day for Sunday, but there’s still a ton of variety in the forecast. We’ll wait before settling on a plan. Happy Easter. Have a great day!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Cycling

Cows are going in soon on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. On to trails… It’s muddy – we got over half an inch of rain on Tuesday. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
