Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s a mixed bag of snow conditions on Mt. Hood this morning (it’s Saturday). Some of it’s wet and sloppy, some of it has a crust atop. Heck, it’ll probably be better after it gets some drizzle on it on Sunday! We’ll see dry weather for Saturday, intermittent drizzle on Sunday, and rain on Monday before a switch to snow late Monday night. The snow level will fall to 1500′ or so by Tuesday morning, but just a few inches are forecast through Wednesday.

For Saturday, expect high overcast sky. The free air freezing level will be 3500′ early, 4500′ in the evening, and 6000′ overnight. We could see a little drizzle or mixed precip overnight. Wind will be SW 15-25 all day and will build to SW 25-35 overnight.

Sunday starts with drizzle and holds on to intermittent drizzle all day. Heavier rain is forecast overnight. It’s worth noting that the warmer overnight temps and drizzle might just improve the groom! The snow level will be 6000′ early and will rise to 10,000′ in the afternoon before dropping just a bit to 9000′ overnight. A trace of rain is forecast during the day. About an inch of rain is forecast overnight. Wind: SW 20-30 in the morning, SW 30-45 in the afternoon, and SW 10-20 after midnight.

Moderate rain continues on Monday and switches to light snow overnight. The snow level will be 9000′ in the morning, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ overnight. By that point, there won’t be all that much moisture left, but we could get just enough snow to improve the surface. About 0.3” rain is forecast during the day. That’s followed by 0.2” mixed precip and 0.3” WE of snow for a few inches of snow overnight. Wind: SW 10-20 in the morning, SW 30-50 in the afternoon, WSW 25-30 in the evening, and SW 20-30 overnight. Intermittent light snow is predicted Tuesday and Wednesday. Models then hint at a warming trend. But you remember how that played out last time. Don’t get too attached to it yet!

Cycling

Cows are going in soon on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. On to trails… It’s muddy – we got over half an inch of rain on Tuesday. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
