Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

A couple inches of new snow will start off your Friday. Will it be enough atop the rain-soaked groom to make for packed powder. Oooohhhh. Tough call. We’ll pick up a few more inches in the morning and follow that up with a dry Saturday. Sunday will probably be just-cloudy for most of the day before rain moves in later. Rain, and warmth – the snow level will rise to 10,000′ with the Sunday-Monday system. But don’t you worry – it’s back down to 2000′ or less by Tuesday!

Friday will be snowy to start, then clear, then high overcast. The snow level will be 4500′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and down to 2000′ in dry weather overnight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day for up to 3” new snow. Just a trace falls in the evening before the weather turns dry. Wind will be SW 15-25 in the morning, WSW 15-20 in the afternoon, and SW 20-30 after midnight.

Saturday looks dry. Thin high clouds early thicken as the day goes on. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 2000′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and will rise to near 8000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: SW 15-25 in the morning, SW 10-15 in the afternoon, and SW 10-20 overnight.

Sunday will be cloudy in the morning and rainy later in the day, but the timing isn’t quite set. Also not set (most likely) will be the snowpack – with high clouds and relatively warm temps overnight, the snow may not set up. The FAF will be 8000′ in the morning and 10,000′ from late morning on. It’s really unclear when/if rain will arrive – it’s surely going to be wet in the metro area, but we’re not yet certain when the rain will come to Mt. Hood. You may have to wait until Monday. Wind on Sunday: SW 15-30ish all day and all night.

Monday looks rainy during the day and snowy overnight with moderate SW wind. We’ll leave the details of Monday until later. Tuesday and Wednesday look much cooler – snow level 2000′ or so – with light snowfall. After that: too much chaos in the models to know.

Cycling

Cows are going in soon on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. On to trails… It’s muddy – we got over half an inch of rain on Tuesday. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
