Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Tuesday was an excellent packed powder and powder day on the mountain, but this time of year you have to get it early. The sun is strong, and the snow warms up quickly! We’ll have dry weather Wednesday, a trace of snow in the evening, and then snow-mixed-rain-snow Thursday into Friday midday. Models are right on the edge for snow/rain/mixed precip for the weekend after a dry stretch (briefly) Friday afternoon.

Wednesday will be partly cloudy to start but will quickly turn high overcast. Light snowfall arrives in the evening. The free air freezing level will be 0-1000′ early. The snow level will rise to 3500′ in the afternoon and 4500′ after midnight with 850mb temps (5000′ or so) pushing into the low 30’s. Just a trace of wet snow is forecast overnight. Wind: SW 10 all day rising to SW 15-30 after midnight.

Thursday starts with snow, switches to mixed precip, turns to rain in the evening, and turns back to snow overnight. The snow level will be 4500′ early, 5500′ mid-morning, 6500′ in the evening (850mb temps at +4C), and back to 4000′ after midnight. Total precip will be somewhere near 1.0” water equivalent (depending on exactly where this system lines up). Call that an inch or two of snow followed by 0.4-0.7” mixed precip and then an inch or two of snow above 4500′. Wind: SW 15-30 in the morning, S 15-25 in the afternoon, and WSW 15-20 after midnight.

Friday picks up a little bit of snow early, sunshine for the afternoon, and some flurries overnight. The snow level will be 3500-4000′ all day. Up to 1” snow is forecast in the morning. Just a trace falls overnight. Wind: WSW 15-20 in the morning, SW 10-20 in the afternoon, and SSW 15-30 in the evening, and SW 30-50 after midnight. Models are unclear about temps and precipitation for the weekend, but it’s no longer going to be warm and sunny. As of right now, temps are right on the edge, so let’s call it mixed precip and wait for the forecast to settle out. Same for early next week – not enough clarity. It does not appear that winter is done…

Cycling

Cows are going in soon on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. On to trails… It’s muddy – we got over half an inch of rain on Tuesday. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
