Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Cool weather with intermittent light snowfall continues through Thursday morning. After that, models are all over the place. Next weekend could bring an atmospheric river of rain, an atmospheric river of snow, or it could bring dry weather, warmer temps, and sunshine! So, let’s stick with what we know.

Saturday starts cloudy on Mt. Hood and adds light snowfall. Snow intensity picks up tonight. The environmental snow level (that predicted by 850mb temps and indicative of snow quality) will be 0-1000′ this morning, 3000′ this afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. The actual snow level remains at 2000′ or less all day. We’re expecting 0.2” water equivalent (WE) today for 2” new snow. Overnight, another 0.5” WE is forecast. Call that 4-5” powder. Wind will be S 10-20 in the morning, SSW 5-10 this afternoon, WSW 20-30 in the evening, and W 20 overnight.

Instability may contribute to some snow flurries on Sunday afternoon, but measurable snow isn’t forecast. The snow level will be 500′ in the morning, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 0-500′ overnight. Wind: W 20 in the morning and light/variable from early afternoon on through the night.

Monday will be clear to start. Snow arrives in the afternoon. The snow level will be 0′ in the morning, 1000-1500′ in the afternoon, and 0-500′ overnight. About 0.1” WE is forecast before sunset. That’s just an inch of snow. Overnight, models suggest a couple inches of additional fluffy powder. Wind: light southerly in the morning rising to S or SW 5-15 in the evening.

Models disagree on the amount of snow on Tuesday. For now, let’s call it 3-7” with light wind and a snow level of 1500′ or less. Dry, cool, sunny weather is forecast on Wednesday. Thursday will probably be dry. After that? Anything could happen. The GFS is leaning on offshore ridging and dry weather. The ECMWF suggests an atmospheric river, and it’s dead set on that this morning. Canadian: very good at compromising (like Canadians),. This model is 50/50. So, enjoy this weekend and wait for clarity!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

Well, now the trails are going to be frozen solid. That makes for good riding if you can avoid the invisible icy spots. On the off chance that things thaw later this week under sunny sky, don’t ride. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
