Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

You’ve all been very patient since the giant snow dumpings that started this season. Well guess what? It appears we’ll be moving back to a snowy setup next week and holding on to that for a bit. If you like your powder dry and fluffy, the forecast contains your desires.

Saturday will be one for the groom, parks, and Nordic. It’s beautiful groom up there. A cloudy start gives way to a snowy, blustery afternoon. The snow level will be 1500′ this morning, 3000′ this afternoon, and 1000-1500′ overnight. About 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast for up to an inch of new snow. Wind will be annoying and could affect some lifts (but not all) this evening: NW 25-30 this morning, WNW 35-40 this afternoon, and NW 30 overnight.

Sunday looks cloudy and windy with scattered flurries in the morning and light snow overnight. High wind could affect lift ops. The snow level will be 1000′ in the morning and will rise to 2500′ in the afternoon as 850mb (5000′) temps rise to 32F or so. Just a trace of snow is forecast in the morning, and an inch or so of new snow is forecast overnight. Wind: NW 30-40 in the morning, NW 40-45 midday (problematic for lifts) and on through the night.

Monday’s forecast will be a little tricky – temps are right on the edge for rain/snow/mixed precip. Let’s give it a day to settle out. It’s worth noting that the wind will be quite strong on Monday, and will combine with significant precip. The snow level drops to 1500′ Tuesday morning in the wake of a cold front. A foot or more of blower powder will fall Tuesday into Wednesday morning. Follow that with dry weather until Friday afternoon and then a shot at a major snowstorm for next weekend. Watching this closely. Enjoy!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Four days of solid westerlies are in the forecast. Make sure you’re bundling up and riding with buddies – the river temp is just 38F, and the air temp will be in the 40’s. For the best results, you’ll be headed east of The Dalles. Saturday starts with 30.20/30.10/30.02, which is plenty of gradient for the entire Gorge. The day starts with 20-25 west of Hood River and east of The Dalles with 5-10 central. Models say 24-27 this afternoon all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. West of Hood River, drizzle falls. Head east for the best results. River flow readings are 90-121 kcfs, river temp is 38F, and high temp forecast is 45F. Don’t forget about that stellar Indian food cart to the east of the Biggs gas stations.

Sunday starts off with 21-24 from Stevenson to Rufus. Afternoon wind will be gusty 22-26 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 26-30 from The Dalles to Boardman. Monday starts with 21-24 in the west and 26-30 east of The Dalles. As a weather system approaches, the wind turns gusty but stays strong. Expect 26-30 out east and 24-27 with rain in the west. High temp: 49F.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

If you ride in the mud, you’ll do significant and permanent damage to the trail bed. Be thoughtful about your riding choices. Also, it’s winter. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
