Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

A mostly cloudy start on the mountain for Friday gives way to a sunny weekend and a snowy, stormy start to the week. Models hint at a period of dry weather later next week followed by a pattern shift to cold and snowy for an extended period. Fingers crossed for that!

For Friday, mostly cloudy weather this morning gives way to partly cloudy sky this afternoon and clear sky overnight. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 3000′ all day and will fall to 1500-2000′ tonight. No precip. Wind: Light and variable peaking at NW 10-15 this afternoon. Snow surface: packed powder, hardpack, and scattered granular.

Saturday will be sunny all day. The free air freezing level will be 1500′ in the morning and will slowly rise to 6000′ in the evening. No precip. Wind: light and variable. Sunday will be clear all the way through midnight. Snow falls after midnight. The freezing level will be 6000′ in the morning, 7000′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ after midnight. About 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast by daybreak Monday for an inch of new. Wind: N 5-10 in the morning, W 10-15 in the afternoon, and W 40 after midnight.

Models call for snow all day Monday. As of this morning, the snow level looks like 3500′ in the morning, 1500′ in the afternoon, and as low as 0′ overnight. Somewhere between 1.0” and 1.5” precip is predicted for 10-15” new snow. Wind will be W 40 ish all day becoming NW 35 overnight. That’s storm skiing weather, but should leave most of the quads running. Snow quality will start out “good” and transition to “excellent and fluffy”. Colder, dry weather is forecast Tuesday and Wednesday. That’s your forecast through then. I’ll be back forecasting Thursday morning when I return from retreat. No hassling my housesitter about the forecast. Just cuz she’s living in my space doesn’t make her responsible!

There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

If you ride in the mud, you’ll do significant and permanent damage to the trail bed. Be thoughtful about your riding choices. Also, it’s winter. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
