Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Dry weather continues through the weekend. The next chance of precip is on Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning, but there’s not much there. Another round of (warm) moisture is possible next weekend. We have to look deep into the future, to the 28th or so, for hints of snow on the slopes.

Saturday (the 19th) will be sunny all day. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′ in the morning, 12,000′ in the afternoon, and 10,000′ overnight. Wind: SE 15 in the morning, S 5-10 in the afternoon, and W 15 overnight.

Sunday will be sunny in the morning and partly cloudy in the afternoon. Clouds build overnight. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′ in the morning, 8000′ in the afternoon, and 6500′ overnight. Wind: W 15 in the morning, WNW 10-15 in the afternoon, and light/variable overnight.

Monday will be cloudy all day but is unlikely to have precip. The free air freezing level will be 6500′ all day. Wind will be light and variable in the morning, W 10 in the afternoon, and WSW 15-20 overnight. A wee bit of rain is forecast on Tuesday afternoon before a transition to snow Tuesday night. This morning’s models call for anything from no precipitation to up to half an inch of precip. We’ll have to wait and see. Looking deeper into the forecast, there are better signs of precip starting around the 28th (you’ll remember that we previously said the same thing about the 18th, 21st, and 23rd). In a hopeful sign, 850mb temps are forecast to drop to 0C around the 28th, which means that any incoming precip is likely to fall as snow. In the meantime… snow dances and dryland training! Stay warm out there!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
There are four events on November 19th. It’s make Mitchell Ridge Great Again Day – a HRATS work party. Meet at the bottom of Post Canyon Road at 9:30 for a ride to the staging area. Big Winds has their annual Local’s Sale. All locals will be on sale for up to 40% off. Gear is on sale too. Okay, it’s the Locals’ Appreciation Sale on gear, not on people who live here, but the former is funnier. There’s a work party on the Indian Creek Trail. That’s 9am-noon. Email [email protected] to register. Also the 19th, at 6pm, Windance has Ladies Night for wind sports. All people who don’t identify as cis-males are welcome to attend (eg: non-binary people, cis-females, trans women, two spirit, etc).

Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Pfriem. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

There’s a work party on Mitchell Ridge today. You can catch a shuttle from the bottom of Post to Seven Streams staging area starting at 9:30. Bring loppers and 5 gallon buckets. It’s Saturday, and the HRATS have a work party. Meet at the bottom of Post starting at 9:30 for a shuttle to the bottom of Mitchell Ridge (parking is limited). Out on the trails, we have freeze-thaw conditions. Please avoid trails that are exposed to the open air, in other words, trails that aren’t under the tree canopy. If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
