Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s another sunny day on the mountain. I was planning every-other day forecasts until something noteworthy shows up in the forecast, but I woke up early and want the opportunity to sleep in on Friday. So… here ya go!

It’ll be sunny all day on the mountain. Timberline has suspended operations as the snow isn’t holding up. Teacup is gamely continuing. They groomed on Wednesday, and as far as I know, don’t plan to groom again until the weekend. So, Thursday will be sunny all day. The free air freezing level will be 6500′ this morning and 500′ this afternoon as the cold pool deepens; at 6am, it was 15F at the base of Meadows and 35F at the top of MHX. Overnight Thursday, the FAF falls to 0′ all across the land, all the way to the coast. Wind: E 25-30mph all day long.

Friday will be sunny all day. The free air freezing level will be 0′ in the morning, but temps will rise to 32F up to 8000′ in the afternoon. Overnight, the FAF rises to 10,000′ with temps at +4C at 5000′. Wind: E 30 in the morning, E 25 in the afternoon, and SE 20 overnight.

Saturday will be sunny, and with decreasing wind, it might be a nice day to hike around in the mountains. The FAF will be 10,000′-12,000′. Wind: SE 20 in the morning, SW 5-10 in the afternoon, and WSW 15 overnight.

Clouds move in on Sunday afternoon after a sunny day. A tiny bit of precip could fall overnight, but it’s going to fall as rain up to 6500′. Trace amounts of rain are forecast on Monday followed by more significant rain on Tuesday. A brief period of snow on Tuesday night transitions to warmer weather and rain from the middle part of next week on. Looking at the extended forecast for Thanksgiving weekend, models hint at warm/wet weather with the snow level above 5000′. In other words, we shall continue with dryland training efforts!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Nuking easterlies continue… Gusts almost reached 100mph at Rooster Rock on Wednesday. With the cool pool deepening, the wind will be somewhat lesser today as the wind pours over the Cascades. We’ll continue with nuking easterlies Friday and Saturday before the wind dips on Sunday and Monday. For Thursday, expect morning easterlies at 50+mph at Rooster, 35-40mph at Stevenson, and 25ish at Viento. The wind drops to 15-20 at Viento, 25-30 at Stevenson, and 40 at Rooster this afternoon. Don’t worry – it’ll rebuild overnight. River flow readings are 81-130kcfs, river temp is 50F, and high temp forecast is 37F.

Friday starts with 50ish at Rooster, 35-40 at Stevenson, and 25ish at Viento. That wind holds all day. Morning temp: mid 20’s. High temp: 36F. Saturday starts out identical to Friday. In the afternoon, the wind drops to 35-40 at Rooster, 25-30 at Stevenson, and 15-20 at Viento. High temp: 40F.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
There are four events on November 19th. It’s make Mitchell Ridge Great Again Day – a HRATS work party. Deets to come. Big Winds has their annual Local’s Sale. All locals will be on sale for up to 40% off. Gear is on sale too. Okay, it’s the Locals’ Appreciation Sale on gear, not on people who live here, but the former is funnier. There’s a work party on the Indian Creek Trail. That’s 9am-noon. Email [email protected] to register. Also the 19th, at 6pm, Windance has Ladies Night for wind sports. All people who don’t identify as cis-males are welcome to attend (eg: non-binary people, cis-females, trans women, two spirit, etc).

Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Pfriem. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Now we have freeze-thaw conditions. Please avoid trails that are exposed to the open air, in other words, trails that aren’t under the tree canopy. If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
