Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Models continue to resolve the details of a weak atmospheric river forecast for the next couple of days. Temps look too warm Thursday and Friday at 5000′ for significant snowfall, but Friday and Saturday look much cooler and snowy. May: the new winter!
Wednesday will be mostly clear with a few high clouds to start. Those clouds flit around all day, and deeper clouds build overnight. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 10,000′ in the morning, 11,000′ in the afternoon (850mb temps at +11C!), and 9000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: SW 5-15 all day building to W/SW 20-30 overnight.
Thursday brings mixed precipitation in the form of alternating rain, snow, and snain at 5000′. Above 6000′: snow most of the time, but a period or rain in the evening. The snow level will be 9000′ prior to dawn but will quickly drop to 5500′. During the day, the snow level bounces around between 4000′ and 6000′ before falling to 5000′ late evening and 3000′ after midnight. About 0.7” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day. 1-3” of wet snow could fall at 5000′, but most of that time we’ll be seeing non-accumulating precip. Overnight, 0.4” WE is forecast. That’ll bring 2-3” of dense snow. Wind: SW 20-30 early building to SW 30-40 in the evening and becoming WSW 45 around midnight. The wind drops to WSW 30 after midnight.
Friday brings light snowfall in the morning and heavy snow overnight. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning and 4000′ from late afternoon on. About 0.1” WE is forecast during the day, for 1” new. About 0.9” WE is forecast overnight, for 8-9” decent’ quality fresh snow. Wind: WSW 25-30 early, SW 5-15 midday, W 15 in the afternoon, and W 30 overnight. Moderate snowfall continues Saturday morning and turns orographic in nature Saturday afternoon. The snow level falls to 1500′ by Sunday morning with a few lingering flurries and a sunny day on tap. This is the last weekend of grooming at Teacup this season, and it’s the last two days (Friday and Saturday) of operations at Meadows this year. Make the most of it!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Looks like y’all were out getting it yesterday, and I don’t blame you. The iWind/iKite sensors showed it was a windy one. It’ll be until the weekend (if we’re lucky) before we have another shot at a day like that. Wednesday starts light and variable and stays nearly calm until 5pm. Westerlies pick up to 10-13 from Stevenson to the Dalles in the evening. River flow is 154kcfs, river temp is 50F, and high temp forecast is 74F.
Thursday will be rainy all day, and the wind will take a break. The western Gorge remains calm or nearly so all day. East of The Dalles, you’ll find gusty 13-16 and intermittent rain. Strong, gusty wind is forecast overnight, but it’ll be dark and you’ll be asleep. High temp: 57F. Friday bring light west wind, 5mph or so, west of Rufus all day long. East of there, you’ll find gusty 10-13. High temp: 57F. Rainy. Stronger wind is forecast for Saturday as offshore high pressure rebuilds behind a departing offshore low. High temp: 51F. Confidence in it being a windy day? About 70%.
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.
Hood River Weather Forecast
Partly high overcast sky this morning stays that way and turns cloudy overnight. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 70’s later. Calm wind until 5pm and then light westerlies. No rainbows. Thursday will be rainy all day. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 50’s later. Calm or very light west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Friday will be rainy then showery. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows.

Cycling
Whoopdee has muddy areas that are too wet to ride. Syncline doubletrack is a stream, and it’s best if you don’t ride on it. Go up Maui instead. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations. Post: snow on the upper part of Eldorado. Much of Post is still too wet/snowy to ride. Do not ride in muddy areas or you will do major and sometimes permanent trail damage. If you do, you’ll force people to repair your mess rather than building new trails. Not cool! Ride gravel roads instead. Columbia Hills is rideable with lots of wildflowers.

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!
