Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Another half a foot of snow fell in the last 24 hours at 5000′. That brings the resort base totals to 174” at Timberline, 140” at Meadows, and 95” at Skibowl, which closed for the season on April 10th. Yesterday’s snow was our last accumulation for a while; we’ve got an inch or two forecast here and there over the next five days, but we’re looks at mostly dry weather on the slopes. We’ll even have periods of above-freezing sunshine!
Thursday, however, starts out cloudy and foggy, and models suggest those clouds will stick around all day. Overnight, the weather turns partly cloudy on the slopes. The snow level will be 3000′ this morning, 4000′ this afternoon, and 4500′ overnight. Thunderstorms are possible again today, but they’ll require some sunshine to develop. Given the transient and unpredictable nature of the storms, it’s hard to predict snowfall; models suggest up to 0.1” water equivalent (WE) today followed by another 0.1” WE tonight for up to a couple inches of new. Wind: SW 25-40 early, SW 5-10 this afternoon, and NW 5-10 overnight.
Friday starts partly cloudy and turns sunny in the afternoon. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 4500′ all day and 3000′ overnight. Wind: NW 5-10 early, NW 20-25 in the afternoon and overnight. Saturday will be sunny all day. The powerful April sun and warming temps will quickly turn the snow to mush; get it early! The FAF will be 3000′ in the morning, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 6500′ overnight. Wind: NW 20-25 in the morning, W 10 in the afternoon, and WSW 15 overnight.
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Nothing too exciting is happening the next few days, but your best chance of a decent west wind day will be Friday in the afternoon. On Thursday, we have atmospheric instability and a low offshore. That’s not helpful. We’ll have light and variable wind early. Models suggest a few-hour period of strong er westerlies – 18-22 east of The Dalles and 10-13 west of The Dalles – between 10am and 1pm or so. After that, the wind levels out to 9-12mph everywhere as rain falls most places west of The Dalles late afternoon onward. River flow is 166kcfs, river temp is 46F, and high temp forecast is 54F.
Friday starts out calm. The wind builds throughout the day as high pressure off southern Oregon and northern California exerts some influence over the Gorge. By 11am, we’ll have 10-13 from Stevenson to The Dalles. 2Pm: 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 10-13 to Rufus. 5Pm: gusty 22-26 from Mosier to Rufus with 14-17 west of Mosier and 7-10 east of Rufus. High temp: 59F.
Saturday looks warmer and sunnier, finally. Westerlies start at 7-10 all through the Gorge. They’ll back off east of The Dalles and rise to 10-13mph from Stevenson to The Dalles midday. A short period of 13-16 is possible between Mosier and Avery for a few hours mid to late afternoon. High temp: 64F. Sunday, a long way out to be forecasting, currently carries a forecast of light/variable wind early with westerlies at 14-17mph in the afternoon under sunny sky.
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.
Hood River Weather Forecast
Nothing sky this morning gives way to clouds, showers, and a chance of thunder/hail this afternoon. Temps will be near 40 early and in the mid 50’s later. Light westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Friday will be partly cloudy with scattered sprinkles possible in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 50’s later. Light wind early. Moderate westerlies in the afternoon. 3% chance of rainbows. Saturday will be partial Nothing early and then sunny. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and mid 60’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. No rainbows.

Cycling
The trails are muddy. Don’t ride in the mud – you’ll damage the trails. Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Also, there is logging happening on Underwood. Do not enter closed areas. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, and the gate is still closed at Binn’s Hill.

On Friday, Earth Day, there’s a work party on Evans Creek in Parkdale. For more information, email alix@hoodriverwatershed.org. HRATS has a dance party fundraiser Friday at the Bingen Theater at 7pm. On Saturday, there’s a work party / cleanup at Family Man at 9:30am. Big Winds and Oregon E-Bikes are having their 35th/5th anniversary sales Friday through Sunday. This is in-person purchases only, and there will be music, food, and other fun stuff happening in the parking lot.
Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site. The Dirty Fingers Sunday Service rides happen every Sunday for a while at 9am. They are fast-paced. If you are not, bring a buddy. The ride is followed by bike race viewing and beer drinking at the shop. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride.
