Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
It’s Sunday, and it’s another day of excellent packed powder on the mountain. The next weather system pushes in during the day on Monday, and models still don’t agree on the 850mb temps when it hits and while it’s here. We then move into another cool and snowy period through Thursday after which temps will resume their normal springtime readings.
Sunday starts off sunny and clear. High clouds build during the day, as does the power of the sun and the on-slope temps. The earlier you get it, the better the conditions will be. What are those conditions? Stellar packed powder groom and 3-5” fresh fluffy powder. The free air freezing level will be 0′ this morning, 2000′ this afternoon, 3000′ this evening, and 5000′ after midnight. No precipitation today, for once. Wind: variable to 15 all day becoming SW 5-15 after midnight.
The next system moves in on Monday. Models have 850mb temps either briefly at +1C (snow level 5000′ or so) or at 2-3C for several hours (snow level 6000-6500′). It does appear the bulk of the precip will arrive when temps are lower. So… perhaps a bit of mixed precip and then snow accumulation. The snow level will drop to 3000′ by the afternoon and 2000-2500′ after midnight. About 0.5” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day, for 4-5” standard-issue Mt. Hood new snow. Another 0.4” WE is forecast overnight, for 4-5” somewhat lighter snow. Wind: SW 5-15 early, SW 25-40 by midday, WSW 20-30 in the afternoon, and WSW 15-20 overnight.
Tuesday sees orographic snowfall continues. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning and 3500-4000′ in the afternoon. About 0.3” to 0.5” WE is forecast during the day, for 3-5” new snow. Just a trace is forecast overnight. Wind: WSW 15-20 in the morning, W 25 in the afternoon, and S 10-20 after midnight.
The first half of Wednesday looks dry. Another system whips through midday with a TBD snow level and about 0.3” WE, also subject to change. Friday’s currently looking dry. Just FYI, Mt. Hood has had over eight feet of snow since the first of April. That’s awesome. Enjoy!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Not much happening for the next few days – we’ll have a serious of offshore lows and active weather that keeps the wind from reaching its full springtime potential. For Sunday, we start light and variable with light westerly gradients. The wind picks up to 15-20 at Viento and 20-25 at Rooster and Stevenson midday. Afternoon easterlies fade to 10-15 in the west and pick up to 10-15 from Hood River eastward. River flow is 164kcfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp forecast is 55F. Monday starts with E 20-25 at Stevenson with 15-20 at Rooster. Afternoon wind becomes westerly. After 2pm, you’ll find very gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to Rowena with 24-27 from The Dalles to Rufus. That lasts a few hours and then slides east to Arlington with gusty 24-27 out there. High temp: 50F. Tuesday starts light and variable. The wind picks up to W 8-11 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 12-15 east to Arlington. High temp: 52F. Easterlies return on Wednesday at 10-20mph.
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling
Well. Seems that the trails are all covered in snow again! We’re also in a freeze-thaw cycle, and trails will be especially susceptible to damage with all this moisture. Don’t ride during the day if it froze last night. Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Also, there is logging happening on Underwood. Do not enter closed areas. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, and the gate is still closed at Binn’s Hill.
