Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
The unseasonably cool and unseasonably snowy weather continues through next week. It’s likely we’ll see some brief periods of rain on the slopes in the next seven days, but all-in-all, we’ll stick with the snow accumulation plan.
Looking at Saturday, we have a system coming in from the south, and then a switch to weather coming in from the west. Snow conditions start as mostly hardpack. The snow level will be 1000′ in the morning, 2500′-3000′ in the afternoon, and back down around 1000′ overnight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today, and another 0.2” WE is forecast tonight. Call that 5-6” total snowfall. Wind: variable to 10 early, W 25-30 in the afternoon (goodbye upper mountain lifts), and W 15 overnight.
Sunday may start off with some sunshine, but high clouds build throughout the day. The free air freezing level will be 0′-1000′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, briefly as high as 5000′ overnight, and back to 4000′ after midnight. NO snowfall. Wind: W 15 early, S 5-10 midday, variable to 10mph in the afternoon, and SSW 10-25 overnight.
Monday brings a return to snowfall. It’s won’t be light and fluffy, but it will keep the snowpack growth going. The snow level will be 4000′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon (briefly), 3500′ in the evening, and 2000′-2500′ overnight. About 0.4” WE is forecast during the day, for 3-4” snow. Another 0.5” to 0.6” is forecast overnight, thanks to orographics, mostly, for 4-6” regular-quality Mt. Hood snow. Wind: SSW 15-25 early, SW 30-40\5 midday, W 30 in the afternoon, and W 25-30 overnight.
Tuesday brings flurries and colder temps with lighter wind. The next system is slated for Wednesday. Temps will likely pop into the rain zone for a bit, but we’re still looking at snow accumulation. What an April we’re having!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
A series of offshore low pressure systems and a notable lack of offshore high pressure keeps the wind from building any consistent strength over the next few days. We’ll see westerlies today (Saturday), but they’re going to be quite gusty and unreliable thanks to atmospheric instability. The day starts with no gradient and light east wind. By late morning, the wind picks up to W gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to Boardman. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 24-27 from Stevenson to Arlington, but don’t count on consistency; we’re also expecting thunderheads and hail. River flow is 160kcfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp forecast is 48F.
Sunday will be calm to start. Easterlies pick up to 20-25 from Rooster to Viento in the afternoon and hold through the evening. High temp: 54F. Monday starts with E 10-15. Afternoon wind switches around to gusty W 17-21 form Stevenson to Boardman. High temp: 53F.
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.
Hood River Weather Forecast
Overcast sky stays that way today and adds rain midday and showers, thunderstorms, and hail later. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Light east wind early. Moderate to strong westerlies later. 99% chance of rainbows. Sunday will be partly cloudy then high overcast, but it’ll be dry. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and mid 50’s later. Light east wind. No rainbows. Monday will be rainy. Temps will be near 40 early and in the low 50’s later. Calm wind early. Moderate westerlies later. 99% chance of rainbows.

Cycling
Well. Seems that the trails are all covered in snow again! We’re also in a freeze-thaw cycle, and trails will be especially susceptible to damage with all this moisture. Don’t ride during the day if it froze last night. Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Also, there is logging happening on Underwood. Do not enter closed areas. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, and the gate is still closed at Binn’s Hill.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. There’s a shop mountain bike ride with the Mountain View Cycles crew at Syncline on Wednesday evenings at 5:45pm.The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site. The Dirty Fingers Sunday Service rides start this weekend. Meet at the shop at 9am for a mixed surface ride. Then there will be bike racing on the big screen in the afternoon.
